Abstract

An apparatus and method for updating the location of an idle-mode MS in a communication system are provided, in which the MS transmits a ranging request message requesting location update to a BS, receives a ranging response message from the BS, determines from the ranging response message whether downlink traffic has been generated for the MS, and performs network reentry if downlink traffic has been generated for the MS, and upon receipt of the ranging request message from the MS, the BS performs a location update procedure, determines whether downlink traffic has been generated for the MS, generates the ranging response message including information indicating whether downlink traffic has been generated for the MS, and transmits the ranging response message to the MS.

Claims

1. A location updating apparatus in a wireless communication system, comprising:

a Mobile Station (MS) for, transmitting a ranging request message requesting location update to a Base Station (BS) if a location update is required, receiving a ranging response message from the BS, determining from the ranging response message whether downlink traffic has been generated for the MS, and performing network reentry if downlink traffic has been generated for the MS; and

the BS for, upon receipt of the ranging request message from the MS, performing a location update procedure, determining whether downlink traffic has been generated for the MS, generating the ranging response message including information indicating whether downlink traffic has been generated for the MS, and transmitting the ranging response message to the MS.

2. The location updating apparatus of claim 1, wherein the BS comprises:

a ranging request processor for performing the location update procedure, if the ranging request message requests location update;

a downlink traffic processor for determining whether downlink traffic has been generated for the MS, if the requested location update is successful; and

a ranging response processor for generating the ranging response message including information indicating whether the location update is successful and indicating whether there is downlink traffic pending for the MS, and transmitting the ranging response message to the MS.

3. The location updating apparatus of claim 1, wherein the MS comprises:

a ranging request processor for generating the ranging request message to perform a location update procedure according to a location update condition in an idle mode;

a ranging response processor for acquiring location update information from the ranging response message and determining whether there is downlink traffic pending for the MS from the ranging response message; and

a network reentry processor for attempting the network reentry to the BS being a preferred BS in order to receive the downlink traffic, if there is downlink traffic pending for the MS.

The location updating apparatus of claim 3, wherein the location update information is paging information and the MS further comprises a location update processor for updating a Paging Listening Interval (PLI) using a new paging cycle and a new paging offset included in the paging information, and storing a new paging group ID included in the paging information.

5. The location updating apparatus of claim 1, wherein the ranging response message includes the information indicating whether downlink traffic has been generated for the MS in a Location Update Response (LUR) Type, Length, Value (TLV) parameter.

6. The location updating apparatus of claim 5, wherein the LUR TLV parameter is configured as the following table:

Type Length Value LUR 23 1 0x00 = Failure of Location Update. The MS shall perform Network Reentry from Idle Mode 0x01 = Success of Location Update 0x02 = Success of Location Update and presence of DL traffic pending 0x03˜

7. A location updating apparatus of a Base Station (BS) in a wireless communication system, comprising:

a ranging request processor for performing a location update procedure, if a ranging request message received from a Mobile Station (MS) requests location update;

a downlink traffic processor for determining whether downlink traffic has been generated for the MS, if the requested location update is successful; and

a ranging response processor for generating a ranging response message including information indicating whether the location update is successful and information indicating whether there is downlink traffic pending for the MS, and transmitting the ranging response message to the MS.

8. The location updating apparatus of claim 7, wherein the ranging response message includes the information indicating whether downlink traffic has been generated for the MS in a Location Update Response (LUR) Type, Length, Value (TLV) parameter.

9. The location updating apparatus of claim 8, wherein the LUR TLV parameter is configured as the following table:

Type Length Value LUR 23 1 0x00 = Failure of Location Update. The MS shall perform Network Reentry from Idle Mode 0x01 = Success of Location Update 0x02 = Success of Location Update and presence of DL traffic pending 0x03˜

10. A location updating apparatus of a Mobile Station (MS) in a wireless communication system, comprising:

a ranging request processor for generating a ranging request message to perform a location update procedure according to a location update condition in an idle mode;

a ranging response processor for acquiring location update information from a ranging response message received from a Base Station (BS) and determining whether there is downlink traffic pending for the MS from the ranging response message; and

a network reentry processor for attempting network reentry to the BS being a preferred BS in order to receive the downlink traffic, if there is downlink traffic pending for the MS.

11. The location updating apparatus of claim 10, wherein the location update information is paging information.

12. The location updating apparatus of claim 11, further comprising a location update processor for updating a Paging Listening Interval (PLI) using a new paging cycle and a new paging offset included in the paging information, and storing a new paging group ID included in the paging information.

13. The location updating apparatus of claim 10, wherein the ranging response message includes information indicating whether downlink traffic has been generated for the MS in a Location Update Response (LUR) Type, Length, Value (TLV) parameter.

14. The location updating apparatus of claim 13, wherein the LUR TLV parameter is configured as the following table:

15. A location updating method in a wireless communication system, comprising:

transmitting, if a location update is required, a ranging request message requesting location update to a Base Station (BS) by a Mobile Station (MS);

performing a location update procedure, upon receipt of the ranging request by the BS;

determining whether downlink traffic has been generated for the MS after the location update procedure, generating a ranging response message including information indicating whether downlink traffic has been generated for the MS, and transmitting the ranging response message to the MS by the BS; and

determining from the ranging response message whether downlink traffic has been generated for the MS, and performing network reentry if downlink traffic has been generated for the MS, by the MS.

16. The location updating method of claim 15, wherein the ranging response message includes the information indicating whether downlink traffic has been generated for the MS in a Location Update Response (LUR) Type, Length, Value (TLV) parameter.

17. The location updating method of claim 16, wherein the LUR TLV parameter is configured as the following table:

18. A location updating method of a Base Station (BS) in a wireless communication system, comprising:

performing a location update procedure, upon receipt of a ranging request message requesting location update from a Mobile Station (MS);

determining whether downlink traffic has been generated for the MS after the requested location update;

generating a ranging response message including information indicating whether there is downlink traffic pending for the MS; and

transmitting the ranging response message to the MS.

19. The location updating method of claim 18, wherein the ranging response message includes information indicating whether downlink traffic has been generated for the MS in a Location Update Response (LUR) Type, Length, Value (TLV) parameter.

20. The location updating method of claim 19, wherein the LUR TLV parameter is configured as the following table:

21. A location updating method of a Mobile Station (MS) in a wireless communication system, comprising:

if a location update is required, generating a ranging request message and transmitting the ranging request message to a Base Station (BS);

upon receipt of a ranging response message from the BS, determining whether there is downlink traffic pending for the MS from the ranging response message; and

performing network reentry, if there is downlink traffic pending for the MS.

22. The location updating method of claim 21, wherein the ranging response message includes information indicating whether downlink traffic has been generated for the MS in a Location Update Response (LUR) Type, Length, Value (TLV) parameter.

23. The location updating method of claim 22, wherein the LUR TLV parameter is configured as the following table:
