Abstract

A device (10, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90) is used to apply an electric pulse or spike to a patient to treat the patient. The device can have a series of preset treatments programmed therein. A user can select a treatment from menus displayed on a display (100). The impedance of the skin and underlying tissue to be treated can be measured prior to the treatment to locate active areas on the skin for treatment. The impedance measurement can be made at a sufficiently low level to avoid treatment of the patient that could cause a change in the impedance. A phase detector can be used to isolate the capacitance value in the impedance. The charge delivered to the patient can be measured and the device can adjust the charge as the skin impedance varies during treatment to deliver uniform charges to the skin. A variety of probes can be used with the device, with the device automatically detecting the type of probe attached. Multiple electrodes can be used on the probe, which allows the active areas in contact with the probe to be identified prior to treatment to allow the treatment to concentrate on the active areas.

Claims

1. An apparatus for treating a patient, comprising:

a device having a pulse generator for generating a pulse train and a control for controlling the pulse generator;

the control having at least one preset treatment for controlling the pulse generator to generate a set of pulses and providing for a graphical selection of said at least one preset treatment.

2. The apparatus of claim 1 further comprising an interface to allow the operator of the device to select a preset treatment.

3. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein the device has a display illustrating a series of stages of progression of a condition of an area to be treated, the control permitting operator selection of a stage in initiate a preset treatment specific to that selected stage.

4. The apparatus of claim 1 further having a plurality of electrodes connected to the device, the control having a first preset treatment for controlling the pulse generator to generate a first set of pulses for delivery to the patient through a first set of said electrodes and a second preset treatment for controlling the pulse generator to generate a second set of pulses for delivery to the patient through a second set of said electrodes.

5. The apparatus of claim 4 wherein each of said set of electrodes has at least four electrodes.

6. An apparatus for treating a patient, comprising:

a device having a pulse generator for generating a pulse train and a control for controlling the pulse generator;

the control having at least one preset treatment for controlling the pulse generator to generate of set of pulses

a display illustrating a series of stages of progression of a condition of an area to be treated, the control permitting operator selection of a stage in initiate a preset treatment specific to that selected stage.

7. An apparatus for treating a patient, comprising:

a device having a pulse generator for selectively generating a controlled electronic treatment pulse and an impedance sensing pulse to the skin of a patient and a control for controlling the pulse generator, the impedance sensing pulse at a level below the level necessary for treatment, the impedance sensing pulse applied to the skin at selected locations to measure the impedance of the body to find active areas.

8. The apparatus of claim 7 further including an audio or visual feedback circuit to indicate the relative impedance sensed by the device.

9. An apparatus for treating a patient, comprising:

a device having a pulse generator for generating a pulse to the skin of a patient and a control for controlling the pulse generator, the device further having an impedance sensing circuit with a phase detector to evaluate the capacitance of the skin of the patient.

10. The apparatus of claim 9 further including a circuit to measure the capacitance of the skin, the control varying the output of the pulse generator to maintain a uniform charge delivered to the patient as the impedance of the skin varies.

11. The apparatus of claim 9 further including a circuit for sensing the effect of the pulse on the patient, the control varying the output of the pulse generator to maintain a uniform effect as the patient is treated.

12. An apparatus for treating a patient, comprising:

a device having a pulse generator for generating a pulse to the skin of a patient and a control for controlling the pulse generator, the device further including a probe having a plurality of electrodes for delivering the pulse to the skin, the control sensing selected parameters of the probe and adjusting the pulse generated by the pulse generator in response to the sensed parameters.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the probe is removable from the device.

14. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the probe has a selected resistance, the control sensing the selected resistance to determine the parameters of the probe.

15. An apparatus of claim 12 wherein the electrodes of the probe are contoured to contact the skin.

16. An apparatus of claim 12 wherein the electrodes are formed of conductive silicon.

17. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein adjacent electrodes on the probe are of opposite polarity.

18. The apparatus of claim 12 further including at least one LED positioned adjacent the electrodes to provide electro stimulation.

19. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the probe further has a pressure cuff to secure the electrodes against the skin of the patient, the control varying the pressure of the cuff to vary the contact between the skin and the electrodes.

20. The apparatus of claim 12 further having a first probe for moving over the skin of the patient for determining an active site and a second probe for static or dynamic placement over or near the active area to treat the active and surrounding areas.

21. The apparatus of claim 20 wherein the first probe is integral with the device.

22. The apparatus of claim 20 wherein the first probe is not integral with the device.

23. An apparatus for treating a patient, comprising:

a device having a pulse generator for generating a pulse to the skin of a patient and a control for controlling the pulse generator, the device further having a patient engaging device having a plurality of electrodes for contact with the skin, the control detecting the impedance of the skin in contact with the electrodes and directing a pulse to active areas of the skin sensed by the control.

24. The apparatus of claim 23 wherein the device includes a display, the active areas being represented on the display to inform the operator of the positions of the active areas.

25. The apparatus of claim 23 wherein the control causes the pulse generator to alternate pulses to selected pairs of the electrodes.

26. The apparatus of claim 23 wherein the plurality of electrodes includes a first electrode pair mounted in a first probe for movement over the skin of the patient to locate an active area and a second multiple electrode pair mounted in a second probe for static or dynamic placement on the skin of the patient at or near the active area for directing a pulse to the active and surrounding areas.

27. The apparatus of claim 26 wherein the first probe is integral with the device.

28. The apparatus of claim 26 wherein the first probe is not integral with the device.

29. The apparatus of claim 28 wherein the first and second probe are the same probe.

30. A device, comprising:

a pulse generator for generating a pulse train;

a control for controlling the pulse generator whereby the pulse is delivered to a patient by a circuit which includes the impedance of the skin of the patient;

whereby the control has a display displaying the well understood modified injury curve and the control has one or more preset treatment parameters for controlling the pulse generator.

31. The device of claim 30 whereby an operator of the device can select a stage of the injury curve whereby the control initiates a preset treatment specific to that stage of injury.

32. The device of claim 30 where each stage of the injury curve has a default preset and other presets are accessible from the display screen of the default preset.

33. The device of claim 30 where the preset parameter chosen is displayed on a screen of the device which has necessary control means to allow treatment to begin immediately by increasing the strength of the signal applied to the patient.

34. A device, comprising:

a pulse generator for generating a pulse train;

a control for controlling the pulse generator whereby the pulse is delivered to a patient by a circuit which includes the impedance of the skin of the patient;

whereby the control has a display displaying words which define the stages of the injury curve and the control having two or more preset treatment parameters for controlling the pulse generator.

35. The device of claim 34 wherein acute and chronic are at least two of the words displayed.

36. A device, comprising:

a pulse generator for generating a pulse train;

a control for controlling the pulse generator whereby the pulse is delivered to a patient by a circuit which includes the impedance of the skin of the patient;

at least one probe which has more than four electrodes for delivering pulses to the skin electrically connected in parallel so that adjacent electrodes are of different polarities so that the electrodes nearest lower skin impedances will deliver more energy to those areas.

37. The device of claim 36 whereby the probe is connected to the skin to provide skin contact with the electrodes.

38. The device of claim 36 whereby the electrodes are equally spaced between adjacent electrodes.

39. The device of claim 37 whereby the electrodes are equally spaced between adjacent electrodes.

40. The device of claim 37 whereby the spacing between electrodes is less than ½

inches.

41. The device of claim 38 whereby the spacing between electrodes is less than ½

inches.

42. The device of claim 37 whereby the spacing between electrodes is less than 1 inch.

43. The device of claim 38 whereby the spacing between electrodes is less than 1 inch.
