Abstract

An insert for a multiple component container includes a reservoir with an opening defined by a peripheral edge which, in use, is connected to a sealing element (20). In use, the reservoir and the sealing element define a substantially sealed space. The reservoir includes a stationary portion (2) and a movable portion (4), which is connected to the stationary portion and is movable with respect thereto by the action of gas pressure within the reservoir. A discharge opening (6) is formed in the movable portion (4) and a gas leakage path is provided in the reservoir wall. A valve member (14) is connected to the stationary portion (2) and cooperates with the discharge opening (6) and substantially seals it. The application of a greater gas pressure to the interior of the reservoir than to its exterior results in movement of the movable portion (4) away from the stationary portion (2) and thus in the valve member (14) moving out of sealing contact with the discharge opening (6).

15. An insert for a multiple component container including a reservoir (2, 4) with an opening defined by a peripheral edge for engagement with a sealing element (20), the reservoir together with a sealing element (20), defining a substantially sealed space, the reservoir including a stationary portion (2) and a movable portion (4), the movable portion (4) being carried by the stationary portion (2) and being movable with respect thereto by the action of gas pressure within the reservoir, a discharge passage (6) being formed in the movable portion (4), a gas leakage path being provided in the reservoir, a valve member (14) connected to the stationary portion (2) and cooperating with the discharge passage, whereby the application of a greater gas pressure to the interior of the reservoir than to its exterior results in movement of the movable portion relative to the stationary portion and thus in the interior of the reservoir communicating with the exterior via the discharge passage, characterised in that the reservoir, in use, together with the sealing element (20) defines a single sealed space, that the discharge passage constitutes an opening (6) in the movable portion (4) and that the valve member (14) cooperates with the discharge opening (6) and substantially seals it, the application of a greater gas pressure to the interior of the reservoir than to its exterior results in the valve member (14) moving out of sealing contact with the discharge opening (6).

An insert as claimed in claim 15 in which the reservoir is a one-piece plastic moulding comprising a diaphragm and the movable portion is connected to the stationary portion by at least two annular fold lines of opposite sense, whereby the application of a greater gas pressure to the interior of the reservoir than to its exterior results in rotational movement about the fold lines and thus in movement of the movable portion.

17. An insert as claimed in claim 15 in which the stationary and movable portions of the reservoir are slidably connected together in the manner of a piston and cylinder.

18. An insert as claimed in claim 15 to which the valve member constitutes a spigot which is integrally connected to the peripheral edge.

19. An insert as claimed in claim 16 to which the valve member constitutes a spigot which is integrally connected to the peripheral edge.

20. An insert as claimed in claim 17 to which the valve member constitutes a spigot which is integrally connected to the peripheral edge.

21. An insert as claimed in claim 18 which includes a support member integral with the stationary portion and the spigot is connected to the peripheral edge by a link which engages and is stabilised by the support member.

22. An insert as claimed in claim 15 in which the valve member and the discharge opening together constitute a one-way valve defining the gas leakage path through which gas may flow into the reservoir but not out of it.

23. An insert as claimed in claim 16 in which the valve member and the discharge opening together constitute a one-way valve defining the gas leakage path through which gas may flow into the reservoir but not out of it.

24. An insert as claimed in claim 17 in which the valve member and the discharge opening together constitute a one-way valve defining the gas leakage path through which gas may flow into the reservoir but not out of it.

25. An insert as claimed in claim 21 in which the valve member and the discharge opening together constitute a one-way valve defining the gas leakage path through which gas may flow into the reservoir but not out of it.

31. An insert for a multiple component container, the insert having a single chamber, said chamber including a first wall portion 2 and a second wall portion 4, said first and second wall portions being movable relative to one another between a first state and a second state,

a valve having a valve member 14 connected to said first wall portion and a discharge opening 6 in said second wall portion, pressure within said reservoir greater than pressure outside of said reservoir causing said wall portions to move relative to one another from said first state to said second state,

said valve member in said first state engaging said discharge opening to maintain said reservoir closed,

said valve member in said second state separating from said discharge opening to provide passage of whatever fluid is held in said reservoir through said discharge opening.

32. The insert of claim 31 wherein:

said valve member is completely removed from said discharge opening in said second state.

33. The insert of claim 31 wherein:

the volume of said chamber in said second state is greater than in said first state.

The insert of claim 31 in which the reservoir is a one-piece plastic moulding comprising a diaphragm and the movable portion is connected to the stationary portion by at least two annular fold lines of opposite sense, whereby the application of a greater gas pressure to the interior of the reservoir than to its exterior results in rotational movement about the fold lines and thus in movement of the movable portion.

35. The insert of claim 34 which includes a support member integral with the stationary portion and the spigot is connected to the peripheral edge by a link which engages and is stabilised by the support member.

36. The insert of claim 35 in which the valve member and the discharge opening together constitute a one-way valve defining the gas leakage path through which gas may flow into the reservoir but not out of it.
