Abstract
A guidewire loaded stent for delivery through a catheter is described herein. The stent delivery assembly can deliver and place a stent within tortuous regions of the body which are accessible to guidewires but inaccessible to stenting catheters. The assembly comprises a guidewire covered in part by a retractable sheath and a radially expandable stent near or at the distal end of the guidewire. The whole assembly is advanced through conventional catheters or it may be used alone. In either case, when the stent is adjacent to a treatment site within the body, the sheath is retracted proximally to expose the stent for radial expansion into contact with the vessel wall. Radio-opaque marker bands are optionally located on either side or both sides of the stent on the guidewire body to aid in visual placement. The assembly can optionally include an expandable balloon on the guidewire for different treatment modalities.

23. A method of delivering a vascular stent within a body comprising:
-
providing an elongate guide in the form of a wire or hypotube having a proximal end, a distal end, a length therebetween, and a radially expandable vascular stent coaxially supported on the elongate guide along a length thereof for placement and movement by the elongate guide;
providing a tubular member;
advancing the elongate guide into the body to provide initial access to a preselected treatment site within the body and to carry and deliver the stent to position the stent at the treatment site, at least a part of the stent positioned within the tubular member during advancement through the body; and
exposing the stent from the tubular member to enable the stent to move from a first reduced diameter position to a second expanded position; and
removing the elongate guide from the body. - View Dependent Claims (24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29, 30, 31, 32, 44)

33. A method of delivering a vascular stent within a hollow body organ comprising:
-
providing a vascular stent delivery assembly including an elongate guide in the form of a wire or hypotube, a vascular stent mounted along a length of the elongate guide proximal of a distalmost tip of the guide, and a tubular member for covering a least a portion of the stent during advancement of the elongate guide through the body;
inserting the elongate guide and stent into the body;
initially advancing the elongate guide into the body to provide initial access to an area of stenosis or aneurysm;
further advancing the elongate guide without passage over a guidewire to cross the stenosis or aneurysm to enable positioning of the stent at the stenosis or aneurysm, the tubular member covering at least part of the stent during advancement through the body; and
exposing the stent from the tubular member to enable the stent to move from a first reduced diameter position to a second expanded position to treat the stenosis or aneurysm. - View Dependent Claims (34, 35, 36, 37, 38, 39, 40, 41)

42. A method of delivering a vascular prosthesis comprising:
-
providing a vascular prosthesis delivery assembly including an elongate guide in the form of a wire or hypotube, a vascular prosthesis mounted along a length of the elongate guide proximal of a distalmost tip of the guide, and a tubular member;
initially advancing the elongate guide into the body to provide initial access to an area of stenosis or aneurysm;
further advancing the elongate guide without passage over a guidewire to cross the stenosis or aneurysm to enable positioning of the prosthesis at the stenosis or aneurysm, the prosthesis positioned within the tubular member during advancement through the body;
exposing the prosthesis from the tubular member to enable the prosthesis to move from a first reduced diameter position to a second expanded position to treat the stenosis or aneurysm; and
withdrawing the elongate guide from the body while leaving the prosthesis in the body. - View Dependent Claims (43, 45, 46)
