Abstract

A method is provided for identifying and verifying a person using hand biometrics with an anti-spoofing measure. The method comprises acquiring (51) a first image (10) of a hand in a first configuration, acquiring (52) a second image (30, 40) of the hand in one of the first and a second configuration for comparison with the first image (10), determining (52) whether a person can be identified from at least one of the first image (10) and the second image (30, 40), and determining (55) from a comparison of the second image (30, 40) with the first image (10) whether the hand is a counterfeit.

Claims

1. A method for identifying a person:

acquiring a plurality of images of a hand;

identifying a person from one of the plurality of images; and

determining whether the hand is a counterfeit from a comparison of the plurality of images.

The method of claim 1 wherein the acquiring a plurality of images comprises acquiring with a first camera a first image of the hand in a first configuration and acquiring at least a second image of the hand in the first configuration with at least a second camera, and the determining step comprises determining whether the hand embodies three dimensions.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein the acquiring a plurality of images comprises acquiring with a camera a first image of the hand in a first configuration and acquiring at least a second image with the camera as the hand is moved from the first configuration.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the plurality of configurations comprises a flat hand and the hand in at least one configuration other than the flat hand.

5. The method of claim 1 wherein the identifying step comprises:

identifying points on the hand;

measuring distances between the points; and

comparing those distances with stored distances.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein the identifying step comprises measuring physical dimensions.

7. The method of claim 1 wherein the identifying step comprises measuring at least one of a ratio between one of finger length and width, a pattern of lines on the palm, textures, colors, and a combination thereof.

8. The method of claim 2 wherein the determining step comprises:

generating a three dimensional image from the first camera and the at least a second camera; and

fitting one of a three dimensional geometric model, an appearance model, or a combination of a geometric model and appearance model to the three dimensional image.

9. The method of claim 1 wherein the identifying step further comprises determining a normalized confidence level from the first image.

10. A method for verifying the identity of a person, comprising:

taking a first picture of a hand;

taking a second picture of the hand;

measuring characteristics of the hand from at least one of the first picture and the second picture; and

determining whether the hand is a counterfeit based on differences between the first and second picture.

11. The method of claim 10 further comprising:

comparing the measured characteristics with stored characteristics; and

indicating whether the measured characteristics match the stored characteristics.

12. The method of claim 10 wherein the indicating step comprises indicating the degree to which the measured characteristics match the stored characteristics.

13. The method of claim 10 wherein one of the first configuration and the second configuration comprises a flat hand and the other of the first configuration and the second configuration comprises the hand in a different configuration, wherein the hand is moved from the first configuration to the second configuration.

14. A method for verifying the identity of a person, comprising:

acquiring a first image of a hand in a first configuration;

assigning a plurality of reference points on the first image of the hand;

measuring characteristics of the plurality of reference points;

comparing the measured characteristics with stored characteristics;

indicating whether the measured characteristics match stored characteristics;

acquiring a second image of the hand in a second configuration; and

determining whether the hand is real based on the second image and the first image.

15. The method of claim 14 wherein the acquiring a first image step comprises acquiring with a camera, and the acquiring a second image comprises acquiring with the camera of the hand in the second configuration.

16. The method of claim 14 wherein one of the first configuration and the second configuration comprises a flat hand and the other of the first configuration and the second configuration comprises the hand in a different configuration, wherein the hand is moved from the first configuration to the second configuration.

17. The method of claim 14 wherein:

the measuring step comprises;

identifying points on the hand; and

the determining step comprises;

measuring distances between the points; and

comparing those distances with stored distances.

18. The method of claim 14 wherein the determining step comprises measuring physical dimensions.

19. The method of claim 14 wherein the determining step comprises measuring at least one of a ratio between one of finger length and width, a pattern of lines on the palm, textures, colors, and a combination thereof.

20. The method of claim 14 wherein the indicating step comprises indicating the degree to which the measured characteristics match the stored characteristics.

21. The method of claim 14 wherein the indicating whether the measured characteristics match step further comprises outputting a normalized score.
