Abstract

A system for evaluating the cardiovascular system parameters using indicator dilution and non-invasive or minimally invasive detection and calibration methods are disclosed. Intravascular indicators are stimulated, and emissions patterns detected for computation of cardiac output, cardiac index, blood volume and other indicators of cardiovascular health.

Claims

1. A method of dye injection for measuring a parameter of the cardiovascular system of a subject comprising:

a) preparing a predetermined quantity of a dye solution to be detected optically when administered into the cardiovascular system of the subject;

b) preparing a predetermined quantity of a physiologic solution to be administered following the dye solution;

c) administering the dye solution as a bolus to the cardiovascular system of the subject within a predetermined period; and

d) administering the physiologic solution as a bolus to the cardiovascular system within a predetermined period subsequent to administration of the dye bolus, wherein the administered physiologic bolus keeps the administered dye bolus relatively compact and facilitates movement of the dye bolus into a rapidly flowing portion of the cardiovascular system.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the quantity of dye solution is within a range of 0.5-5 ml.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the quantity of physiologic solution is within a range of 3-5 ml.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein either the dye bolus or the physiologic solution bolus are administered within a range of 1-5 seconds.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining a dye dilution curve.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the subject'"'"'s cardiac output is determined from the dye dilution curve.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the quantity of the dye bolus varies based on the subject'"'"'s weight.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the quantity of the dye solution varies based on the subject'"'"'s age.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the quantity of the physiologic solution varies based on the subject'"'"'s weight.

10. The method of claim 1, wherein the quantity of the physiologic solution varies based on the subject'"'"'s age.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the dye bolus and the physiologic solution bolus are administered by one or a combination of syringes.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the dye bolus and the physiologic solution bolus are administered based on a triggering signal.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the triggering signal is generated based on either the subject'"'"'s respiratory cycle or an electrocardiogram.

14. The method of claim 1, wherein the dye bolus and the physiologic solution bolus are administered by a catheter to the subject'"'"'s peripheral vein.
