Abstract

A registration pointer includes a camera located in an elongated shaft having a distal end configured to be contacted to a bone of a patient to register the bone to a computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system. The camera may be a hemispherical camera and may include a panoramic camera and a wide-angle camera equipped with a fish-eye lens. The registration pointer is configured to transmit images received by the cameras to the computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system for display thereon. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system may be configured to generate an image, such as a hemispherical image, based on the images received from the registration pointer.

Claims

1. A registration pointer for registering a bone with a computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system, the registration pointer comprising:

a sensor array;

an elongated shaft; and

a camera located in the elongated shaft.

2. The registration pointer of claim 1, further comprising a quartz crystal lens located at a distal end of the elongated shaft.

3. The registration pointer of claim 1, wherein the camera is a hemispherical camera.

4. The registration pointer of claim 3, wherein the hemispherical camera includes a first camera and a second camera.

5. The registration pointer of claim 4, wherein the first camera is a panoramic camera.

6. The registration pointer of claim 5, wherein the panoramic camera has a horizontal field of view of about 360 degrees and a vertical field of view of about 120 degrees when the elongated shaft is positioned on a vertical plane.

7. The registration pointer of claim 5, wherein the second camera is a wide-angle camera.

8. The registration pointer of claim 7, wherein the wide-angle camera has a vertical field of view of about 60 degrees when the elongated shaft is positioned on a vertical plane.

9. The registration pointer of claim 7, wherein the wide-angle camera includes a fish-eye lens.

10. The registration pointer of claim 1, further comprising a light source.

11. The registration pointer of claim 10, wherein the light source comprises a light emitting diode located in the elongated shaft.

12. The registration pointer of claim 10, wherein the light source is a fiber optic light source.

13. The registration pointer of claim 1, further comprising a transmitter communicatively coupled to the camera and configured to transmit images received from the camera.

14. The registration pointer of claim 13, wherein the transmitter is a wireless transmitter.

15. The registration pointer of claim 1, further comprising an input device and a control circuit communicatively coupled to the camera and the input device, the control circuit being configured to store an image received from the camera in response to selection of the input device by a user of the registration pointer.

16. The registration pointer of claim 1, further comprising an input device and a control circuit communicatively coupled to the input device, the control circuit being configured to register a location of the bone in response to selection of the input device by a user of the registration pointer.

17. A computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system comprising:

a registration pointer having a camera;

a display device;

a processor communicatively coupled to the registration pointer and the display device; and

a memory device electrically coupled to the processor, the memory device having stored therein a plurality of instructions, which when executed by the processor, cause the processor to;

receive a first image and a second image from the registration pointer;

generate a third image based on the first image and the second image; and

display the third image on the display device.

18. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 17, wherein the third image is a hemispherical image.

19. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 17, wherein the camera is a hemispherical camera.

20. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 19, wherein the hemispherical camera includes a first camera and a second camera.

21. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 20, wherein the first camera is a panoramic camera.

22. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 20, wherein the second camera is a wide-angle camera having a fish-eye lens.

23. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 17, wherein to receive the first image and the second image comprises to wirelessly receive the first image and the second image from the registration pointer.

24. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 17, wherein the display device is a heads-up display device.

25. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 17, wherein to display the third image comprises to display the third image superimposed on a rendered image of a bone.

26. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 17, wherein the plurality of instructions further cause the processor to:

receive a signal from the registration pointer; and

store the third image based on the signal.

27. The computer assisted orthopaedic surgery system of claim 17, wherein:

(i) the registration pointer includes a sensor array; and

(ii) the plurality of instructions further cause the processor to;

determine a location of the registration pointer based on a location of the sensor array; and

display indicia of the location of the registration pointer on the display device.

28. A method for displaying an image of a patient during the performance of an orthopaedic surgical procedure, the method comprising:

receiving a first image from a first camera of a registration pointer;

receiving a second image from a second camera of the registration pointer;

generating a hemispherical image based on the first image and the second image; and

displaying the hemispherical image on a display device.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein receiving the first image comprises receiving the first image from a panoramic camera.

30. The method of claim 28, wherein receiving the second image comprises receiving the second image from a wide-angle camera having a fish-eye lens.

31. The method of claim 28, further comprising activating a light source of the registration pointer.

32. The method of claim 28, further comprising determining a location of a sensor array associated with the registration pointer.
