Abstract

The present invention relates to filtration devices and related methods of use. In particular, the present invention relates to implantable filtration devices used, for example, for filtering impurities from a body fluid of a subject.

Claims

1. A device configured for implantation into a living organism, said device comprising a housing with at least one opening, said housing configured to engage vascular tissue through said at least one opening such that an engagement results in the formation of a capillary bed within said housing, said housing having therein a plurality of semi-permeable hollow fibers connected to a conduit, said plurality of semi-permeable hollow fibers configured to remove impurities from blood and pass said removed impurities into said conduit.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein said at least one opening is longitudinal slit.

3. The device of claim 1, further comprising a reservoir configured to receive said removed impurities from said conduit.

4. The device of claim 3, further comprising a vascular access port configured to access said reservoir.

5. The device of claim 1, wherein said vascular tissue is selected from the group consisting of femoral artery and femoral vein.

6. The device of claim 1, wherein said housing has therein exogenous growth factors for enhancing said capillary bed formation within said housing.

7. The device of claim 6, further comprising a pump, wherein said pump is configured to deliver said growth factors to said housing.

8. The device of claim 6, wherein said growth factors are at least one growth factor selected from the group consisting of platelet-derived growth factors, vascular endothelial growth factors, and fibroblast growth factors.

9. The device of claim 4, wherein said vascular access point is configured for removal of said impurities collected in said reservoir.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein said vascular tissue is an AV loop between the femoral artery and femoral vein of said living organism.

11. The device of claim 1, wherein said vascular tissue is comprises vascular tissue selected from the group consisting of the iliac artery of said living organism, the iliac vein of said living organism, and a tissue flap.

12. The device of claim 1, further comprising a renal tubule device configured to receive said removed impurities from said conduit.

13. The device of claim 12, wherein said renal tubule device has therein kidney epithelial cells.

14. The device of claim 1, wherein said conduit is configured to associate with the ureter of said living organism and/or the bladder of said living organism.

15. The device of claim 1, further comprising a nanofabricated membrane.

16. A method of treating renal failure in a living organism, comprising placement of said device of claim 1 into a living organism such that said housing engages vascular tissue.

17. The method of claim 16, wherein said engagement results in the formation of a capillary bed within said housing.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein said capillary bed provides blood to said housing for filtration.

19. The method of claim 16, wherein impurities collected with said device of claim 1 are removed through said vascular access point.
