A system and method for managing work flow in a hospital emergency department providing care for a plurality of patients are disclosed. The system includes a server, one or more portable wireless communication devices and application software that can run on the server. The application software maintains a database or other information storage means having information about the plurality of patients and providing communications with the one or more communication devices. Communications are provided in an automatic, persistant and redundant manner.
