Abstract

An improved handheld electronic device includes an Application Programming Interface (API) that generates various notifications in certain circumstances. Certain predetermined criteria that have been established for a particular routine on the handheld electronic device are employed to ignore certain of the notifications in appropriate circumstances in order to conserve computing and power resources.

Claims

1. A method of processing notifications provided by a routine, the method comprising:

receiving a series of notifications;

making a determination that at least some of the notifications meet one or more predetermined criteria; and

responsive to said determination, ignoring certain of the notifications.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising making as at least a part of the determination one of:

a determination that at least a first notification is of a predetermined type; and

a determination that at least a first notification is not of a predetermined type.

3. The method of claim 2, further comprising at least one of:

making as the determination that at least a first notification is of a predetermined type a determination that the at least first notification refers to a file that is of a predetermined type; and

making as the determination that at least a first notification is not of a predetermined type a determination that the at least first notification refers to a file that is not of a predetermined type.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising making as at least a portion of the determination a determination that at least a first notification is a notification of a renaming of a file that is not of a predetermined type into a file that is of a predetermined type and, responsive thereto, treating the at least first notification as a notification of a creation of the file that is of the predetermined type.

The method of claim 1, further comprising making as at least a portion of the determination a determination that at least a first notification is a notification of a renaming of a file that is of a predetermined type into a file that is not of a predetermined type and, responsive thereto, treating the at least first notification as a notification of a deletion of the file that is of the predetermined type.

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising determining that a predetermined period of time has expired since a reception of a notification without reception of a subsequent notification and, responsive thereto, initiating said making a determination.

The method of claim 1, further comprising employing as one of the predetermined criteria a determination that a particular notification and an immediately subsequent notification are the same notification, and ignoring as at least a portion of said certain of the notifications one of the particular notification and the immediately subsequent notification.

8. The method of claim 1, further comprising employing as one of the predetermined criteria a determination that:

a particular notification is one of two types of notifications and is with respect to a specific file, and

a subsequent notification is one of the two types of notifications and is with respect to the specific file; and

responsive to said employing, ignoring as at least a portion of said certain of the notifications one of the particular notification and the subsequent notification.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising employing as the two types of notifications a CREATE notification and an UPDATE notification.

10. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

making as at least a portion of said determination a determination that;

a particular notification is a predetermined type of notification,

a subsequent notification is a predetermined type of notification, and

a preceding notification is a predetermined type of notifications; and

ignoring as at least a portion of said certain of the notifications the particular notification and one of the preceding notification and the subsequent notification.

11. The method of claim 10, further comprising making as said at least portion of said determination a determination that:

the particular notification is a DELETE notification,

the subsequent notification is one of a CREATE notification and an UPDATE notification, and

the preceding notification is one of a CREATE notification and an UPDATE notification.

12. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

making as at least a portion of said determination a determination that;

a particular notification is a predetermined type of notification,

one of a preceding notification and a subsequent notification is a predetermined type of notification, and

the other of the preceding notification and the subsequent notification is not a predetermined type of notification; and

ignoring as at least a portion of said certain of the notifications the particular notification.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising treating the one of the preceding notification and the subsequent notification as a particular type of notification.

14. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

making as said at least portion of said determination a determination that;

the particular notification is a DELETE notification,

the one of the preceding notification and the subsequent notification is one of a CREATE notification and an UPDATE notification, and

the other of the preceding notification and the subsequent notification is neither a CREATE notification nor an UPDATE notification;

ignoring as at least a portion of said certain of the notifications the DELETE notification; and

treating the one of the preceding notification and the subsequent notification as an UPDATE notification.

15. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

making as at least a portion of said determination a determination that;

a particular notification is a DELETE notification as to one file,

a subsequent notification is a RENAME notification as to the renaming of another file from its name to the name of the one file;

treating the DELETE notification and the RENAME notification as being a DELETE notification as to the another file and an UPDATE notification as to the one file.

16. The method of claim 1 wherein said ignoring comprises treating at least a first ignored notification as a different notification.

17. A handheld electronic device comprising an input apparatus, a processor apparatus, and an output apparatus, the processor apparatus comprising a processor and a memory, the memory further having stored therein a number of routines which, when executed on the processor, cause the handheld electronic device to be adapted to perform operations comprising:

receiving a series of notifications;

making a determination that at least some of the notifications meet one or more predetermined criteria; and

responsive to said determination, ignoring certain of the notifications.

18. The handheld electronic device of claim 17 wherein the operations further comprise making as at least a part of the determination one of:

a determination that at least a first notification is of a predetermined type; and

a determination that at least a first notification is not of a predetermined type.

19. The handheld electronic device of claim 18 wherein the operations further comprise at least one of:

making as the determination that at least a first notification is of a predetermined type a determination that the at least first notification refers to a file that is of a predetermined type; and

making as the determination that at least a first notification is not of a predetermined type a determination that the at least first notification refers to a file that is not of a predetermined type.

20. The handheld electronic device of claim 17 wherein the operations further comprise making as at least a portion of the determination a determination that at least a first notification is a notification of a renaming of a file that is not of a predetermined type into a file that is of a predetermined type and, responsive thereto, treating the at least first notification as a notification of a creation of the file that is of the predetermined type.

The handheld electronic device of claim 17 wherein the operations further comprise making as at least a portion of the determination a determination that at least a first notification is a notification of a renaming of a file that is of a predetermined type into a file that is not of a predetermined type and, responsive thereto, treating the at least first notification as a notification of a deletion of the file that is of the predetermined type.

22. The handheld electronic device of claim 17 wherein the operations further comprise determining that a predetermined period of time has expired since a reception of a notification without reception of a subsequent notification and, responsive thereto, initiating said making a determination.

23. The handheld electronic device of claim 17 wherein the operations further comprise employing as one of the predetermined criteria a determination that a particular notification and an immediately subsequent notification are the same notification, and ignoring as at least a portion of said certain of the notifications one of the particular notification and the immediately subsequent notification.

24. The handheld electronic device of claim 17 wherein the operations further comprise employing as one of the predetermined criteria a determination that:

a particular notification is one of two types of notifications and is with respect to a specific file, and

a subsequent notification is one of the two types of notifications and is with respect to the specific file; and

responsive to said employing, ignoring as at least a portion of said certain of the notifications one of the particular notification and the subsequent notification.

25. The handheld electronic device of claim 24 wherein the operations further comprise employing as the two types of notifications a CREATE notification and an UPDATE notification.

26. The handheld electronic device of claim 17 wherein the operations further comprise:

making as at least a portion of said determination a determination that;

a particular notification is a predetermined type of notification,

a subsequent notification is a predetermined type of notification, and

a preceding notification is a predetermined type of notifications; and

ignoring as at least a portion of said certain of the notifications the particular notification and one of the preceding notification and the subsequent notification.

27. The handheld electronic device of claim 26 wherein the operations further comprise making as said at least portion of said determination a determination that:

the particular notification is a DELETE notification,

the subsequent notification is one of a CREATE notification and an UPDATE notification, and

the preceding notification is one of a CREATE notification and an UPDATE notification.

28. The handheld electronic device of claim 17 wherein the operations further comprise:

making as at least a portion of said determination a determination that;

a particular notification is a predetermined type of notification,

one of a preceding notification and a subsequent notification is a predetermined type of notification, and

the other of the preceding notification and the subsequent notification is not a predetermined type of notification; and

ignoring as at least a portion of said certain of the notifications the particular notification.

29. The handheld electronic device of claim 28 wherein the operations further comprise treating the one of the preceding notification and the subsequent notification as a particular type of notification.

30. The handheld electronic device of claim 28 wherein the operations further comprise:

making as said at least portion of said determination a determination that;

the particular notification is a DELETE notification,

the one of the preceding notification and the subsequent notification is one of a CREATE notification and an UPDATE notification, and

the other of the preceding notification and the subsequent notification is neither a CREATE notification nor an UPDATE notification;

ignoring as at least a portion of said certain of the notifications the DELETE notification; and

treating the one of the preceding notification and the subsequent notification as an UPDATE notification.

31. The handheld electronic device of claim 17 wherein the operations further comprise:

making as at least a portion of said determination a determination that;

a particular notification is a DELETE notification as to one file,

a subsequent notification is a RENAME notification as to the renaming of another file from its name to the name of the one file;

treating the DELETE notification and the RENAME notification as being a DELETE notification as to the another file and an UPDATE notification as to the one file.

32. The handheld electronic device of claim 17 wherein said ignoring comprises treating at least a first ignored notification as a different notification.
