Abstract

Methods, systems, devices and computer programs for configuring nodes on a wireless network can include generating a security key for the network, setting the security settings on the access point based on the security key, and saving the security key in a profile data file on a removable memory device along with a portable configuration utility for using the profile data file for configuring other nodes on the network. The removable memory device can then be inserted into other nodes and the portable configuration utility can be run to match the same key on the other network nodes based on the information stored in the profile data file on the removable memory device.

Claims

1. A method of configuring nodes in a wireless network using a removable memory device, the method comprising:

a.) inserting the removable memory device into a first node in the network;

b.) running a configuration utility configured to automatically and randomly generate security information for the wireless network;

c.) configuring the first node of the network using the generated security information;

d.) copying the security information onto the removable memory device; and

e.) removing the programmable memory device from the first node;

f.) inserting the programmable memory device into another node of the wireless network;

g.) configuring the another node of the network using the generated security information.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising repeating steps f and g until every node in the wireless network has been configured.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the configuration utility is preloaded on the first node, the method further comprising the steps of:

reading configuration information from the first node;

storing the configuration information onto the removable storage medium;

configuring the another node of the network using the stored configuration information.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the first node includes a configuration button configured to run the configuration utility, the method further comprising pressing the configuration button to run the configuration utility.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the configuration utility is preloaded on the first node, the method further comprising the steps of

copying a portable configuration utility onto the removable storage medium.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein configuring the another node of the network using the security information further comprises running the portable configuration utility.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the generated security information comprises a security key.

8. The method of claim 3, wherein the configuration information comprises a service set identifier (SSID).

9. A wireless router, comprising:

an interface for receiving a removable programmable memory device

a client utility;

a user interface for starting the client utility; and

a server utility;

wherein in response to the activation of the user interface, the client utility is configured to;

generate a random security key;

send the generated security key to the server utility on the wireless router;

generate a configuration profile data file including the generated security key;

save the configuration profile data file and a portable utility program on the programmable memory device; and

wherein the server utility is configured to receive the generated security key and set the generated security key on the wireless router.

10. The router of claim 9, wherein the client utility is further configured to read a security set identifier (SSID) from the router and generate the configuration profile data file to include the SSID.

11. The router of claim 9, wherein the client utility is further configured to generate the configuration profile data file to include other security information.

12. The router of claim 11, wherein the other security information comprises an encryption type used by the wireless router.

13. A removable programmable memory device configured for interfacing with nodes in a wireless network;

the memory device comprising;

a configuration profile data file including security information related to the nodes in the wireless network

a portable utility program configured for installing the configuration profile data file onto nodes in the wireless network and automatically setting up security settings on a node in the wireless network when the memory device is coupled to the node.

14. The memory device of claim 13, wherein the configuration profile data file further includes configuration information related to the nodes in the wireless network.

15. The memory device of claim 13, wherein the security information includes a security key for the wireless network.

16. The memory device of claim 13, wherein the security information further comprises an encryption type for the wireless network.

17. The memory device of claim 14, wherein the configuration information includes a service set identifier (SSID) for the wireless network.

18. A computer program product stored on a removable programmable memory device, the computer program product comprising:

computer code for reading wireless security settings from a configuration profile data file stored on the removable programmable memory device; and

computer code for setting wireless security settings on a node in a wireless network based on the wireless security settings in the configuration profile data file.

19. The computer program product of claim 18 further comprising computer code for reading configuration information from the configuration profile data file and setting configuration settings on the node based on the configuration information in the configuration profile data file.

20. The computer program product of claim 18, wherein the wireless security settings include a security key.

21. The computer program product of claim 18, wherein the wireless security settings include an encryption type.

22. The computer program product of claim 19, wherein the configuration information includes a service set identifier (SSID) for the wireless network.

23. A system for configuring nodes in a wireless communication network, the system comprising:

a removable programmable memory device;

at least one client station having an interface for accepting the removable programmable memory device; and

an access point comprising;

an interface for accepting the removable programmable memory device

a client utility;

a user interface for starting the client utility; and

a server utility;

wherein, in response to activation of the user interface, the client utility is configured to;

generate a random security key;

send the generated security key to the server utility

generate a configuration profile data file including the generated security key; and

save the configuration profile data file and a portable utility program on the programmable memory device;

wherein the server utility is configured to receive the generated security key and set the generated security key on the access point;

wherein the portable utility program on the removable programmable memory device is configured to set up security setting settings on the at least one client station based on the generated security key when the removable programmable memory device is coupled to the at least one client station.

24. The system of claim 23, wherein the client utility is further configured to read a security set identifier (SSID) from the access point and generate the configuration profile data file to include the SSID.

25. The system of claim 23, wherein the client utility is further configured to generate the configuration data file to include other security information.

26. The system of claim 25, wherein the other security information comprises an encryption type used by the access point.

27. The system of claim 26, wherein the portable utility program on the removable programmable memory device is configured to set up security setting settings on the at least one client station based on the other security information when the removable programmable memory device is coupled to the at least one client station.

28. The system of claim 24, wherein the portable utility program on the removable programmable memory device is configured to set up the at least one client station based on the SSID when the removable programmable memory device is coupled to the at least one client station.
