Abstract

In accordance with one aspect, a system for generating a three-dimensional MRI image is provided. In one embodiment, the system includes a composite-image generation module, an auto-segmentation module and a 3D rendering module. The composite-image generation module is configured to register a plurality of gray-scale slices and generate a plurality of composite-color slices where each of the plurality of composite-color slices is generated from a group of registered gray-scale slices. The auto-segmentation module is configured to receive the plurality of composite-color slices and identify features within each of the composite-color slices. The 3D rendering module is configured to convert the plurality of auto-segmented, composite-color slices into a three-dimensional image.

Claims

1. A method of generating a three-dimensional color MRI image, the method comprising acts of:

a) generating a plurality of sets of MRI images of an object wherein each set is generated using different parameters than others of the plurality of sets;

b) registering a group of slices included in the plurality of sets by spatially aligning slices in each of the plurality of sets of MRI images with corresponding slices in each of the others of the plurality of sets;

c) generating a composite color image of each registered group;

d) auto-segmenting features appearing in the composite color images; and

e) generating a three dimensional image from the composite color images.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising an act of employing a different pulse sequence to generate each of the plurality of sets of MRI images.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein the act of generating includes an act of combining the plurality of sets of color MRI images using image-characteristics of a plurality of different biological features.

4. The method of claim 3, further comprising an act of selecting a biological feature from a group consisting of fat content, water content and muscle content.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the act of auto-segmenting includes an act of performing auto-segmentation without human intervention.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the features include one or more organs.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein the features include one or more boundaries between an organ and adjacent biological matter.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the act of generating the three dimensional image includes an act of generating a three dimensional subject image for diagnosis.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising an act of comparing a three-dimensional feature of the subject image with a three-dimensional feature of a reference image.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the reference image includes a known pathological condition.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein a boundary of at least one feature appearing in a composite color image is identified to within ±

3 millimeters or greater accuracy of an actual location of the boundary.

12. The method of claim 1, wherein the act of segmenting includes an act of identifying, in a composite color image, a boundary of a region comprising at least a part of an organ.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the boundary is identified to within ±

3 millimeters or greater accuracy of an actual location of the boundary.

14. A system for generating a three dimensional MRI image, the system comprising:

a composite-image generating module configured to register a plurality of gray-scale slices and generate a plurality of composite-color slices wherein each of the plurality of composite-color slices is generated from a group of registered gray-scale slices;

an auto-segmentation module configured to receive the plurality of composite-color slices and identify features within each of the composite-color slices; and

a 3D rendering module configured to convert the plurality of auto-segmented, composite-color slices into a three dimensional image.

15. The system of claim 14, wherein the composite-image generation module includes a registration module.

16. The system of claim 14, further comprising a user interface configured to display the three dimensional image.

17. The system of claim 14, further comprising a processing module configured to measure a dimension of at least one of the features appearing in at least one of the composite-color slices.

18. The system of claim 17, wherein the processing module is further configured to determine a volume of the at least one of the features.

19. The system of claim 17, wherein the dimension is employed in a surgical planning process.

20. The system of claim 14, wherein a boundary of at least one feature appearing in a composite color slice included in the plurality of composite color slices is identified to within ±

3 millimeters or greater accuracy of an actual location of the boundary.

21. The method of claim 14, wherein the act of segmenting includes an act of identifying, in a composite color slice included in the plurality of composite color slices, a boundary of a region comprising at least a part of an organ.

22. The method of claim 21, wherein the boundary is identified to within ±

3 millimeters or greater accuracy of an actual location of the boundary.
