Abstract

A method and an apparatus for the creation and management of test cases for a device under test (DUT) through a command terminal are provided. The method includes using the command terminal to select the DUT and connecting to the DUT. The method also includes enabling input of a text string through the command terminal to the DUT, the text string includes a command and optionally one or more command parameters. Furthermore, the method for the creation and management of test cases includes storing the command in a data file. The apparatus includes a command terminal to display a command response of the DUT, a panel to display a command execution history, and a connection control to establish a connection to the DUT.

6. A method for creating a test case for a device under test (DUT) through a command terminal, the method comprising:

selecting said DUT in said command terminal, wherein said selecting includes retrieving connection parameters for said DUT;

connecting to said DUT using said connection parameters;

enabling input of a text string in said command terminal, wherein said text string includes a command;

sending said text string to said DUT;

storing said command in a data file.

7. The method for creating said test case as recited in claim 6, wherein said text string further comprising at least one command parameter.

8. The method for creating said test case as recited in claim 7 further comprising detecting a prompt in a command-response from said DUT.

9. The method for creating said test case as recited in claim 6 further comprising storing said command in a command execution history buffer.

10. The method for creating said test case as recited in claim 6 wherein said connecting further comprising capturing values of said connection parameters.

11. The method for creating said test case as recited in claim 7 wherein said sending further comprising capturing a value of said command parameter.

12. The method for creating said test case as recited in claim 6 wherein said storing further comprising associating said data file with said DUT.

13. The method for creating said test case as recited in claim 9, wherein said analyzing further comprising pattern matching using a plurality of prompts stored in a prompt data storage to find a prompt associated with said DUT in said command-response.

14. An apparatus for creating a test case for a device under test (DUT), comprising:

a command terminal to display a command response of said DUT;

a panel to display a command execution history, wherein the command execution history include a plurality of previously executed commands; and

a connection control to establish a connection to said DUT.

15. The apparatus for creating a test case as recited in claim 14, wherein the panel further comprising a list display control to associate a command in the command execution history with an execution control to enable re-execution of the command.

The apparatus for creating a test case as recited in claim 15, wherein the panel further comprising a selection control to select or unselect the command, wherein unselecting the command disables execution of the command within the command execution history when the command execution history is selected for execution.

17. The apparatus for creating a test case as recited in claim 15 further comprising a save file control to store in a data file selected ones of the plurality of previously executed commands.

18. The apparatus for creating a test case as recited in claim 14 further comprising a prompt management user interface to manage prompts in a prompt data store.

19. The apparatus for creating a test case as recited in claim 18, wherein the prompt management user interface further comprising a control to add a prompt to the prompt data store.

20. The apparatus for creating a test case as recited in claim 19, wherein the prompt management user interface further comprising a control to delete a the prompt from the prompt data store.

21. The apparatus for creating a test case as recited in claim 14 further comprising a device information user interface to manage device parameters, device parameters include interface type and IP address of the DUT.

22. A method of managing a test case for a device under test (DUT) comprising:

separating the test case into a plurality of execution steps, wherein each execution step in the plurality of execution steps is associated with a command;

assigning a completion behavior to each execution step in the plurality of execution steps, wherein the completion behavior includes determining completion of the execution step; and

assigning an extra command to each execution step in the plurality of execution steps, wherein the extra command includes a preset answer to the command query.

23. The method of managing a test case as recited in claim 22, further comprising assigning a repeat behavior to the to each execution step in the plurality of execution steps, wherein the repeat behavior include specifying a number of execution of the execution step.

24. The method of managing a test case as recited in claim 22, further comprising assigning a wait period for the execution step to wait before starting execution.
