Abstract

A patient support including a frame and a mattress supported by the frame. The frame includes a deck support and a deck supporting the mattress.

Claims

1. A patient support apparatus comprising:

a mattress having at least one inflatable bladder;

a pressure control system which is operable to inflate and deflate the at least one inflatable bladder; and

a controller area network (CAN) communicating with the pressure control system, the CAN having a number of modules and a serial bus connecting the modules such that the modules are in communication with each other.

2. The patient support apparatus of claim 1, wherein one of the number of CAN modules includes a caregiver control module.

3. The patient support apparatus of claim 2, wherein the caregiver control module is electrically coupled to a plurality of input devices each configured to allow a user to control operation of various functions of the patient support apparatus.

4. The patient support apparatus of claim 3, further comprising a bed frame configured to support the mattress therein, wherein the input devices include a left siderail controller coupled to a left siderail of the frame and a right siderail controller coupled to a right siderail of the frame.

5. The patient support apparatus of claim 2, wherein one of the number of CAN modules includes a dynamic surface module configured to control inflation and deflation of the mattress.

6. The patient support apparatus of claim 5, wherein the dynamic surface module includes the pressure control system.

7. The patient support apparatus of claim 6, wherein the pressure control system includes a plurality of valve solenoids configured to open and close to adjust the level of inflation of the mattress.

8. The patient support apparatus of claim 6, wherein the pressure control system includes a plurality of pressure transducers configured to sense air pressure within the at least one inflatable bladder.

9. The patient support apparatus of claim 8, wherein the pressure control system includes an A/D converter configured to convert the voltage measurement output from the pressure transducers to a digital value.

10. The patient support apparatus of claim 5, wherein the pressure control system includes a pump configured to inflate the at least one inflatable bladder.

11. The patient support apparatus of claim 5, wherein the dynamic surface module includes a mattress sensor configured to detect whether the mattress has been connected to the CAN.

12. The patient support apparatus of claim 11, wherein the mattress sensor is a Hall effect field sensor.

13. The patient support apparatus of claim 1, further comprising a bed frame configured to support the mattress thereon, wherein one of the number of CAN modules includes a logic module configured control movement of bed frame.

14. The patient support apparatus of claim 13, wherein the logic module is electrically coupled to an angle sensor configured to measure the angle of a head section of the mattress.

15. The patient support apparatus of claim 14, wherein the angle sensor is a potentiometer.

16. The patient support apparatus of claim 13, wherein the logic module is electrically coupled to a temperature sensor configured to measure the temperature of a linear actuator of the patient support apparatus.

17. The patient support apparatus of claim 1, wherein the CAN includes an addressing system wherein each module of the CAN is able to broadcast a message on the serial bus to all modules.

18. The patient support of claim 17, wherein the message includes an identifier such that each module is configured to determine whether to process the message depending upon whether the message is relevant to a particular module.

21. The patient support apparatus of claim 16, wherein the logic control module is in electrical communication with at least one of an angle sensor, a motor sensor, and a siderail position sensor.

22. The patient support apparatus of claim 16, wherein the scale module is in electrical communication with a plurality of load cells coupled to the bed frame and a bed exit sensor coupled to the bed frame.

23. The patient support apparatus of claim 16, wherein the dynamic surface module is in electrical communication with a plurality of pressure transducers configured to measure the air pressure within the head section, seat section, and foot section bladders of the mattress.

19. A patient support apparatus comprising:

a bed frame;

a mattress supported on the bed frame, the mattress having at least one inflatable bladder; and

a controller area network (CAN) having a plurality of interconnected modules for controlling the operation of the bed frame and the mattress.

The patient support apparatus of claim 19, wherein the plurality of interconnected modules includes one or more of a logic module configured to control movement of the bed frame, a power supply module configured to supply power to the CAN, a scale module configured to weigh a patient positioned on the mattress, a dynamic surface module configured to control pressure within the at least one inflatable bladder, a caregiver module configured to process caregiver inputs, and a sidecomm module configured to control at least one of a nurse call function and room lighting.

24. The patient support apparatus of claim 19, wherein each module includes a controller, a transceiver and associated electronics.

25. The patient support apparatus of claim 19, wherein the CAN further includes a serial bus connecting the modules such that each module is configured to transmit data on the serial bus and receive data from the bus.

26. The patient support apparatus of claim 25, wherein multiple modules of the CAN are able to access the serial bus generally simultaneously.

27. A patient support apparatus comprising:

a bed frame having a base frame, an intermediate frame coupled to the base frame for up and down movement relative to the base frame, and an articulating deck coupled to the intermediate frame and having articulating deck sections;

a mattress supported on the articulating deck of the bed frame, the mattress having at least one inflatable bladder;

a first control module configured to control inflation and deflation of the at least one inflatable bladder;

a second control module configured to control movement of one or more of the bed frame components; and

a network configured to provide communication between the first and second control modules.
