Abstract

A system and method for cell reselection in a radio communication network is provided. The system comprises a mobile terminal transmitting a receive signal strength list after measuring signal strengths of at least a neighbor cell; and a host system selecting a cell suitable for the mobile terminal based on a suitable cell list and the receive signal strength list and transmitting the cell reselection information to the mobile terminal. The suitable cell list comprises information representing whether or not the neighbor cell is suitable for selection by the mobile terminal.

29. A method comprising:

scanning for one or more base stations neighboring a host base station with which a mobile terminal is communicating;

transmitting a request to the host base station, wherein the request comprises identity and signal strength data for said one or more base stations;

receiving a response from the host base station, wherein the response comprises identity data for at least one target base station, wherein the host base station selects said at least one target base station from a list comprising data for said one or more base stations, wherein said list is generated according to criteria associated with at least one of quality of service and performance rate suitable for the mobile terminal; and

selecting said at least one target station,

wherein the selecting is performed by the mobile terminal based on the identity data provided by the host base station; and

wherein the host base station comprises a table comprising information about data transfer rate and types of services supported by the one or more base stations.

30. The method of claim 29, wherein the host base station comprises a table comprising information about quality of service supported by the one or more base stations.

31. The method of claim 29, wherein the host base station comprises a table comprising performance rate supported by the one or more base stations.

32. The method of claim 29, wherein the host base station recommends a target base station based on the quality of service suitable for supporting the mobile terminal.

33. The method of claim 29, wherein the host base station recommends a target base station based on the performance rate suitable for supporting the mobile terminal.

44. The method of claim 29, wherein the host base station selects said at least one target base station that can support services requested by the mobile terminal.

34. A method of handover in a mobile communication network, the method comprising:

scanning for one or more base stations neighboring a host base station with which a mobile terminal is communicating;

transmitting a request to the host base station, wherein the request comprises first information associated with said one or more base stations; and

receiving a response from the host base station, wherein the response identifies at least one target base station, wherein the host base station selects said at least one target base station based on second information.

35. The method of claim 34, wherein the first information comprises at least one identifier identifying one of the base stations neighboring the host base station.

36. The method of claim 34, wherein the first information comprises at least a signal strength associated with one of the base stations neighboring the host base station.

37. The method of claim 34, wherein the second information comprises criteria for recommending a target base station suitable for the mobile terminal.

38. The method of claim 37, wherein the criteria comprises type of service to be supported by the target base station.

39. Sew) The method of claim 37, wherein the criteria comprises data rate to be supported by the target base station.

40. The method of claim 37, wherein the criteria comprises performance rate to be supported by the target base station.

41. The method of claim 37, wherein the criteria comprises quality of service to be supported by the target base station.

42. The method of claim 37, wherein the second information is stored in the host base station.

43. The method of claim 37, wherein the second information is stored in a table in the host base station.
