Abstract
A communication system is provided that includes nodes and communication controllers each operating with multiple antennas. During communications, the communication controller assigns timeslots to individual nodes for transmitting requests to a controller. When an individual node has data to transmit, the node transmits a request signal to a communication controller over the assigned timeslot. After receipt of a grant, the node transmits the data message in packetized form to the controller. The request, grant and data message can be transmitted and received using multiple antennas on both the node and the controller.

transmitting a reservation request from the first node to a communication controller in a slot of a frame when the first node has at least one packet data message prepared for transmission;
receiving a grant signal from the communication controller in response to the communication controller receiving the first request signal from the first node; and

transmit a reservation request from the first node to a communication controller in a slot of a frame when the first node has at least one packet data message prepared for transmission;
receive a grant signal from the first communication controller in response to the first communication controller receiving the first request signal from the first node; and
transmit the at least one packet data message from the first node to the first communication controller in response to receiving the grant signal from the communication controller.
