Abstract
A communication system is provided that includes a controller providing a map of information to enable communication with a plurality of nodes. The information includes identification of two separate time slots, one for random access requests when a node initially contacts a controller and another for exclusively assigned access to transmit messages. The map further provides information to enable identification of the nodes and assigns transmission frequencies.

34. A method of communicating data between at least a first communication controller in a system of controllers and a plurality of nodes comprising:
-
transmitting a map from the first communication controller to a first node in the plurality of nodes, wherein the map includes information allowing access by nodes to transmit reservation requests in at least two slots of a frame, along with information identifying the first node and assigning one of the at least two slots where the first node can transmit requests exclusively from the first node; and
receiving a reservation request in one of the at least two slots from the first node provided in response to the information in the map. - View Dependent Claims (35, 36, 37, 38, 39)

-
receiving a map transmitted from the first communication controller to at least a first node in the plurality of nodes, wherein the map includes information allowing access to at least the first node to transmit reservation requests in at least two slots of a frame, along with information identifying the first node and assigning one of the at least two slots where the first node can transmit requests exclusively from the first node; and
transmitting from the first node a reservation request in one of the at least two slots in response to the information provided in the map. - View Dependent Claims (42, 43, 44, 45, 46)

49. A method of operating a data communication network containing a plurality of communication controllers and communication nodes located over a wide geographical area, the method comprising:
-
transmitting a map of handoff signals from a first one of the communication controllers to at least a first one of the nodes to enable another one of the communication controllers to handoff communication with the first node to the first communication controller, wherein the handoff signals comprise a clocking signal synchronizing an initial slot of time in a frame for the first node to transmit a request to communicate;
receiving the request signal from the first node at the first communication controller in the at least one slot of time; and
transmitting a grant signal from the first communication controller to the first node in response to the first communication controller receiving the request signal from the first node. - View Dependent Claims (50, 51)

52. A method of operating a data communication network containing a plurality of communication controllers and communication nodes located over a wide geographical area, the method comprising:
-
transmitting a map of handoff signals from a first one of the communication controllers to at least a first one of the nodes to enable another one of the communication controllers to handoff communication with the first node to the first communication controller, wherein the handoff signals comprise a clocking signal to enable synchronizing an initial slot of time in a frame for the first node to transmit a request to communicate;
receiving the request signal from the first node at the first communication controller in the at least one slot of time, the request including a pseudo noise signal; and
transmitting a grant signal from the first communication controller to the first node in response to the first communication controller receiving the request signal from the first node, wherein the grant repeats the pseudo noise signal transmitted from the first node. - View Dependent Claims (53, 54)
