Abstract

Disclosed are methods and apparatus for implantation into the walls of an organ such as the stomach. Deformable or inflatable anchors with a connector between are used to pull the walls of the organ together, or to implant devices in the wall of the organ. Also disclosed are surgical instruments useful in practicing the disclosed methods.

Claims

1. A method for reducing the stomach volume in a patient comprising the steps of:

a. Placing an inflateable balloon through a trocar and into the abdominal cavity of the patient in an undeployed configuration;

b. Deploying the inflateable balloon inside the abdominal cavity between the abdominal wall and the anterior wall of the stomach;

c. Attaching the balloon to the abdominal wall using at least one attachment site on the balloon.

2. The method of claim 1 further comprising the step of Inflating the balloon through an inflation channel.

3. The method of claim 1 wherein said balloon further comprises an attached mesh and further comprises attaching said mesh to the abdominal wall of a patient.

4. The method of claim 1 wherein said balloon conforms to a portion of the stomach when the balloon is inflated and further comprises positioning the balloon over a region of the stomach.

5. A system to create satiety in a patient comprising:

a. An inflateable balloon configured to reduce the volume of the stomach when inflated and when the balloon is attached to the abdominal wall and not the stomach;

b. A fastener adapted to secure the balloon to the abdominal wall.

6. The system of claim 5 further comprising a surgical access port adapted to house the inflateable balloon when the inflateable balloon is in an undeployed state.

7. The system of claim 5 further comprising a mesh which contacts a portion of the the balloon.

8. The system of claim 5 wherein said balloon conforms to the shape of at least a portion of the stomach when inflated.

9. The system of claim 5 wherein said fastener is adapted to attach the balloon to the abdominal wall from within the abdominal cavity.

10. A method of inducing satiety in a patient comprising the steps of:

a. Placing a single inflateable balloon through a trocar and into the abdominal cavity in an undeployed configuration;

b. Deploying the inflateable balloon inside the abdominal cavity between the abdominal wall and the anterior wall of the stomach;

c. Attaching said balloon to the abdominal wall using an attachment fixture;

d. Positioning said balloon so that a portion of the balloon conforms to the curvature of the stomach.

11. The method of claim 10 wherein said fixture is a mesh.

12. The method of claim 10 wherein said mesh is constructed so as to induce tissue ingrowth.

13. The method of claim 10 wherein said attachment fixture is adapted to fix the balloon to the abdominal wall from within the abdominal cavity and further comprises attaching said balloon to the portion of the abdominal wall within the abdominal cavity.
