Abstract

A method of confirming the location of an elongate member configured for placement within a patient'"'"'s sinus cavity comprises introducing the elongate member through a nasal passageway to place a distal tip of the elongate member in a test position, the elongate member configured to emit illuminating light via the distal end of the elongate member. The location of the light is then viewed through the patient'"'"'s skin to confirm the positioning of the elongate member.

Claims

1. A method of confirming the location of an elongate member configured for placement within a patient'"'"'s sinus cavity comprising;

introducing the elongate member through a nasal passageway to place a distal tip of the elongate member in a test position, the elongate member configured to emit illuminating light via the distal end of the elongate member; and

viewing the location of the light through the patient'"'"'s skin to confirm the positioning of the elongate member.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the elongate member comprises a lumen extending there through.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein a wire guide is slidably disposed within the lumen of the elongate member.

4. A method of confirming the location of a wire guide intended to be positioned within a patient'"'"'s sinus cavity comprising;

introducing a wire guide through a nasal passageway to place a distal tip of the wire guide in a test position;

advancing an elongate member over the wire guide to place a distal end at or adjacent to the distal tip of the wire guide, the elongate member emitting illuminating light via the distal end of the elongate member; and

viewing the location of the light through the patient'"'"'s skin to confirm the positioning of the wire guide.

5. The method of claim 4, further comprising the step of removing the elongate member from the wire guide and advancing a balloon catheter over the wire guide.

6. The method of claim 4, further comprising the step of repositioning the wire guide based at least in part on the viewed location of the light.

7. A method of confirming the location of an elongate member intended to be positioned within a patient'"'"'s sinus cavity comprising;

introducing the elongate member through a nasal passageway to place a distal tip of the elongate member in a test position, the elongate member including a detection element positioned at or adjacent to the distal tip of the elongate member; and

placing a detector device external to the patient'"'"'s skin adjacent to the intended sinus cavity so as to detect the presence or absence of the detection element.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the detection element is formed from a magnetic material.

9. The method of claim 8, wherein the detector comprises a magnetic field detector.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein the detection element is formed from a metallic material.

11. The method of claim 7, wherein the elongate member comprises a wire guide.

12. A method of placing an elongate member into the ostium of a paranasal sinus comprising:

introducing a directable endoscope into the nasal cavity;

introducing a guide catheter into the nasal cavity to position a distal tip near the sinus ostium;

manipulating the endoscope to move the viewing field toward the sinus ostium;

inserting the elongate member through a lumen in the guide catheter; and

manipulating the elongate member to place the elongate member at least partially within or adjacent to the sinus ostium.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the elongate member comprises a wire guide.

14. The method of claim 13, further comprising the steps of advancing a balloon catheter over the wire guide so as to position the balloon at least partially within the sinus ostium and expanding the balloon.

15. The method of claim 13, further comprising the steps of removing the guide catheter from the nasal cavity and subsequently advancing a balloon catheter over the wire guide so as to position the balloon at least partially within the sinus ostium and expanding the balloon.

16. The method of claim 13, further comprising the step of introducing a light transmitter into the sinus to aid in visualization.

17. A method of placing an elongate member into the ostium of a paranasal sinus comprising:

introducing a retrograde viewing rigid endoscope into the nasal cavity;

introducing a guide catheter into the nasal cavity to position a distal tip near the sinus ostium;

orienting the endoscope to move the viewing field toward the sinus ostium;

inserting the elongate member through a lumen in the guide catheter; and

manipulating the elongate member to place the elongate member at least partially within or adjacent to the sinus ostium.

18. The method of claim 17, wherein the elongate member comprises a wire guide.

19. The method of claim 18, further comprising the steps of advancing a balloon catheter over the wire guide so as to position the balloon at least partially within the sinus ostium and expanding the balloon.

20. The method of claim 18, further comprising the steps of removing the guide catheter from the nasal cavity and subsequently advancing a balloon catheter over the wire guide so as to position the balloon at least partially within the sinus ostium and expanding the balloon.

21. The method of claim 18, further comprising the step of introducing a light transmitter into the sinus to aid in visualization.

22. A method of placing a wire guide into the ostium of a paranasal sinus comprising:

introducing a guide catheter into the nasal cavity to position a distal tip near the sinus ostium;

inserting a wire guide through a lumen in the guide catheter;

manipulating the wire guide to place the wire guide at least partially beyond a distal tip of the guide catheter;

introducing a flexible visualization scope over the wire guide to position a viewing field toward the sinus ostium; and

manipulating the wire guide to place the wire guide at least partially within the sinus ostium.

23. The method of claim 22, further comprising the steps of

removing the flexible visualization scope from the wire guide and advancing a balloon catheter over the wire guide so as to position the balloon at least partially within the sinus ostium;

and

expanding the balloon.

24. A method of placing a wire guide into the ostium of a paranasal sinus comprising:

introducing a directable endoscope sheath into the nasal cavity, the endoscope sheath including at least one working lumen therein;

manipulating the endoscope to move the viewing field toward the sinus ostium;

inserting a wire guide through the lumen in the endoscope sheath; and

manipulating the wire guide to place the wire guide at least partially within or adjacent to the sinus ostium.

25. The method of claim 24, further comprising the steps of

removing the flexible visualization scope from the wire guide and advancing a balloon catheter over the wire guide so as to position the balloon at least partially within the sinus ostium;

and

expanding the balloon.
