Abstract

A system for analyzing a bodily fluid is described, which contains at least one lancing element, such as a lancet, stored in a first magazine, and at least one test element with a detection area, stored in a second magazine, the detection area containing reagents if necessary for use in detecting the analyte. The system also includes a housing, which encloses at least part of the first magazine and the second magazine and includes an opening for placement of a body part. At least one of the lancing elements and at least one of the test elements are located below the opening, and one of the magazines is located at least partly between the opening and the other magazine. The two magazines may at least partially overlap. The lancing element and the test element may be moved toward the opening so the body part resting on the opening can be lanced with the lancing element and the emerging bodily fluid can be collected using the test element at the same opening.

Claims

1. A system for analyzing a bodily fluid collected from a body part including:

a housing having an opening;

a first magazine located at least partially within the housing and including at least one lancing element, the first magazine being moveable to align a lancing element with the opening to lance the body part; and

a second magazine located at least partially within the housing and at least partially overlapping the first magazine, the second magazine including at least one test element including a detection area and being moveable to align a test element with the opening to receive body fluid from the lanced body part;

wherein at least one of the first magazine or the second magazine includes at least one recess allowing a portion of the other magazine to be exposed to the opening.

2. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein the at least one lancing element and the at least one test element are moved in succession toward the opening.

3. The system as recited in claim 1 further including a drive configured to incrementally move the first magazine.

4. The system as recited in claim 3 wherein the drive is configured to incrementally move the second magazine.

5. The system as recited in claim 1 further including a drive configured to move one of the at least one lancing element and the at least one test element toward the opening.

6. The system as recited in claim 5 wherein the drive is configured to move the other of the at least one lancing element and the at least one test element toward the opening.

7. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein at least one of the first magazine and the second magazine has a substantially circular profile.

8. The system as recited in claim 1 further including a resilient carrier wherein the at least one of the lancing element and the at least one test element is mounted on the resilient carrier in a manner allowing the element to be deflected upwardly toward the opening.

9. The system as recited in claim 8 wherein the at least one of the lancing element and the at least one of test element is mounted on the resilient carrier in a manner allowing the element to be deflected downwardly away from the opening.

10. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein the lancing element is designed to draw fluid.

11. The system as recited in claim 10 wherein the at least one lancing element and the at least one test element are brought into contact with each other.

12. The system as recited in claim 1 further including a detection device.

13. The system as recited in claim 1 further including an evaluation device.

14. The system as recited in claim 1 further including a display.

15. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein the at least one lancing element includes a bend.

16. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein the at least one lancing element includes sterile protection.

17. The system as recited in claim 1 wherein the opening includes a press-down piece for placement of the body part on the opening.

23. The device as set forth in claim 15 further including a bending station capable of bending a portion of the lancing elements in order to configure the lancing element to lance the body part.

24. The device as set forth in claim 23 wherein the bending station includes a first lever and a second lever interconnected to the first lever, the second lever having a length differing from the first lever.

25. The device as set forth in claim 24 wherein the second lever includes a rounded portion affixed to the end of the lever.

18. A device for determining parameters of blood obtained from a body part including:

a housing including an opening;

a first magazine at least partially located within the housing including a plurality of lancing elements;

a second magazine at least partially located within the housing including a plurality of test elements; and

a spring mechanism capable of moving at least one lancing element and one test element in the direction of the opening in order to allow the lancing element to lance the body part and the test element to receive the blood.

19. The device as set forth in claim 18 wherein at least a portion of one of the first or second magazine overlaps at least a portion of the other magazine.

20. The device as set forth in claim 19 wherein the first magazine has a substantially circular profile.

21. The device as set forth in claim 20 wherein the second magazine has a profile substantially similar to the first magazine.

22. The device as set forth in claim 18 wherein each of the test elements includes a detection area including a reagent layer capable of reacting to the concentration of an analyte in the blood.

26. The device as set forth in claim 18 further including a drive capable of incrementally moving at least one of the first magazine or the second magazine.

27. The device as set forth in claim 18 further including an optical reader capable of measuring analyte characteristics of the blood.

28. The device as set forth in claim 18 wherein the first magazine further includes a plurality of recesses located between adjacent lancing elements and the second magazine further includes a plurality of recesses located between adjacent test elements.

29. The device as set forth in claim 28 wherein at least a portion of one of the lancing elements is located in one of the recesses of the second magazine when the lancing element is aligned with the opening.

30. The device as set forth in claim 29 wherein at least a portion of one of the test elements is located within one of the recesses in the first magazine when the test element is aligned with the opening.

31. The device as set forth in claim 30 wherein one of the first magazine or the second magazine substantially overlaps the other of the first magazine or the second magazine.
