Abstract
Disclosed are various methods and devices for facilitating medical and/or procedures that are performed without “general anesthesia,” which is also described in the specification as the state of patient “unconsciousness” resulting from a drug administered by an anesthetist or anesthesiologist. The devices safely and effectively provide and maintain drug infusions that do not push the patient into unconsciousness and/or general anesthesia. Devices according to embodiments of the invention include the use of stored parameters and/or values that correlate to drug delivery during a procedure, and a patient health monitor to measure and send signals regarding a patient health condition to a processor or other computational device.

a patient health monitor device adapted to be coupled to a patient that is undergoing a procedure without general anesthesia, said monitor generating a signal reflecting measurements of at least one monitored physiological condition of the patient;
a controllable drug delivery device adapted to supply one or more drugs to the patient;

179. An apparatus suitable for use by a non-anesthetist medical person during the performance of a medical and/or surgical procedure, said apparatus providing effective sedation without general anesthesia to a non-intubated patient in need thereof, said apparatus comprising:

a drug delivery device adapted to be coupled to said patient in need of said sedation during said procedure, said device being adapted to deliver a drug dosage that may approach but is insufficient to result in general anesthesia of the patient;
at least one sensor coupled to the patient for providing feedback signals of at least one physiological condition of the patient during said procedure; and

208. An apparatus suitable for use under control of non-anesthetist personnel for performing a medical and/or surgical procedure on a spontaneously-ventilating patient in need of sedation and/or pain control during the procedure, said apparatus comprising:

a drug delivery device adapted to deliver a drug to the patient in need of sedation and/or pain control during said medical procedure, said device being controlled to deliver an appropriate dosage to said patient sufficient to provide sedation or pain control while maintaining effective spontaneous-ventilation of the patient;
a sensor attached to the patient for sensing physiological data indicative of effective spontaneous ventilation of the patient and providing sensed data of said ventilation to a controller;
an electronic controller, said controller receiving said sensed data from said sensor and for safely controlling said dosage of said drug so as to maintain effective spontaneous ventilation of said patient; and
