Abstract

A method of issuing a purchase card is provided. The method includes the steps of presenting a purchaser with the opportunity to buy the purchase card, determining whether the purchaser has sufficient funds to pay for the purchase card, creating a purchase card account for a recipient designated by the purchaser, and issuing the purchase card. The purchase card may also be issued in connection with another credit card, for example as a rebate for purchases on the credit card. The purchase card may also be converted to a credit card.

90. A method for processing a card over a computer network comprising:

providing notice to a purchaser to activate a card on a site on a first computing system over a first computer network;

prompting the purchaser to provide predetermined card information, verification information and additional data and communicating the information and data to a second computing system;

processing the information and data on the second computing system and generating processing results; and

notifying the purchaser of the results.

91. The method of claim 90 further comprising providing a third computing system in communication with the second computing system over a second computer network and wherein the first computer network is the Internet and further wherein the first computing system is a personal computer.

92. The method of claim 91 where the third computing system is a computing system of a third party processor.

93. The method of claim 90 wherein the card comprises a stored value card.

94. The method of claim 93 further comprising determining with a computer processor whether the purchaser has sufficient funds in a card-based account of the purchaser to pay for the stored value card.

95. A method of activating a financial transaction card through a provider site on a global computer network comprising:

providing notice to a purchaser to activate a card on a site on a first computing system over a computer network;

prompting the purchaser to provide predetermined card information, verification information and additional data and communicating the information and data to a second computing system; and

processing the information and data on the second computing system and generating processing results.

96. The method of claim 95 wherein the provider is the issuer.

97. The method of claim 95 wherein the card comprises a stored value card.

98. The method of claim 97 further comprising determining with a computer processor whether the purchaser has sufficient funds in a card-based account of the purchaser to pay for the stored value card.

99. The method of claim 95 further comprising providing a third computing system in communication with the second computing system over a second computer network and wherein the global computer network is the Internet and further wherein the first computing system is a personal computer.

100. The method of claim 99 where the third computing system is a computing system of a third party processor.

101. A method of activating a card by a cardholder through a computing system comprising:

providing notice to a purchaser to activate a card on a site on a first computing system over a first computer network;

prompting the cardholder to provide predetermined card information, verification information and additional data and communicating the information and data to a second computing system;

processing the information and data on the second computing system;

verifying the information and data against security rules; and

notifying the cardholder of the results.

102. The method of claim 101 wherein the card comprises a stored value card.

103. The method of claim 102 further comprising determining with a computer processor whether the purchaser has sufficient funds in a card-based account of the purchaser to pay for the stored value card.

104. The method of claim 101 further comprising providing a third computing system in communication with the second computing system over a second computer network and wherein the first computer network is the Internet and further wherein the first computing system is a personal computer.

105. The method of claim 104 where the third computing system is a computing system of a third party processor.

106. A method of activating a purchaser account through a global computer network comprising:

providing a purchaser accessible activation site on a first computing system over a first computer network;

prompting the purchaser to provide predetermined card information, verification information and additional data and communicating the information and data to a second computing system;

processing the information and data on the second computing system and generating processing results; and

notifying the purchaser of the results.

107. The method of claim 106 wherein the card comprises a stored value card.

108. The method of claim 107 further comprising determining with a computer processor whether the purchaser has sufficient funds in a card-based account of the purchaser to pay for the stored value card.

109. The method of claim 106 further comprising providing a third computing system in communication with the second computing system over a second computer network and wherein the first computer network is the Internet and further wherein the first computing system is a personal computer.

110. The method of claim 109 where the third computing system is a computing system of a third party processor.

111. The method of claim 107 further comprising enabling the purchaser to add funds to the card after the card is issued.

112. A method for processing a card over a computer network comprising:

providing notice to a purchaser to activate a card on a site on a first computing system over a first computer network, wherein the card comprises a stored value card;

prompting the purchaser to provide predetermined card information, verification information and additional data and communicating the information and data to a second computing system;

processing the information and data on the second computing system and generating processing results;

providing a third computing system in communication with the second computing system over a second computer network and wherein the first computer network is the Internet and further wherein the first computing system is a personal computer;

where the third computing system is a computing system of a third party processor;

determining with a computer processor whether the purchaser has sufficient funds in a card-based account of the purchaser to pay for the stored value card; and

notifying the purchaser of the results.
