Abstract

A catheter securement device holds a medical article such as a catheter hub or a connector fitting in position upon the body of a patient and at least inhibits longitudinal movement of the medical article. The securement device includes a retainer and at least one anchor pad. The retainer forms a central channel into which at least a portion of the medical article is inserted. The retainer includes at least one abutment that can abut against a contact point or surface on the medical article. The abutment, in conjunction with a second abutment and/or a tapering shape of the central channel, inhibits motion of the medical article in proximal and distal directions through the central channel. For this purpose, the abutment surface(s) can lie either within or outside the channel.

Claims

1. A retainer for securing a medical article, the retainer comprising:

a channel comprising a central axis extending substantially longitudinally therethrough, wherein the channel is configured to retain at least a portion of the medical article;

a longitudinally extending opening providing access to the central channel;

a pair of facing chamfered surfaces, wherein the chamfered surfaces are located on opposite sides of the longitudinally extending opening, wherein the medical article can be pressed against the chamfered surfaces so as to widen the longitudinally extending opening and permit ingress of the medical article into the central channel; and

an abutment extending generally normal to the central axis and configured to inhibit longitudinal translation of the medical article relative to the retainer.

2. The retainer of claim 1, further comprising at least one support disposed on the underside of the retainer and located to one side of the longitudinal channel.

3. The retainer of claim 1, further comprising a second support disposed on the underside of the retainer on the opposite side of the longitudinal channel as the first support.

4. The retainer of claim 1, additionally comprising at least one flexible anchor configured to contact the skin of the patient and inhibit motion of the retainer relative to the patient.

5. The retainer of claim 1, wherein the channel has a generally tapering shape.

6. The retainer of claim 5, wherein the tapering shaped of the channel generally matches a tapering shape of a retained portion of the medical article.

7. The retainer of claim 1, further comprising a second abutment.

8. The retainer of claim 7, wherein said first abutment and said second abutment cooperate to define a slot therebetween.

9. The retainer of claim 8, wherein said slot is configured to receive a radially extending member of the medical article.

10. An apparatus for retaining a portion of a medical article, the apparatus comprising:

a body portion comprising;

a channel extending through the body portion, said channel being shaped to retain at least a portion of said medical article; and

a pair of movable walls defining a longitudinal opening, said walls being laterally deformable outward to increase the size of the longitudinal opening, wherein said longitudinal opening provides access to the central channel; and

a pair of supports located on the underside of the body portion and on either side of the longitudinal opening; and

a pair of anchors comprising lower adhesive surfaces configured to be secured to the skin of a patient, said anchors supporting the body portion.

11. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the channel is defined at least in part by at least one abutment extending substantially normal to a central axis of the channel.

12. The apparatus of claim 11, wherein said abutment is configured to contact a surface of the medical article so as to inhibit longitudinal movement of the medical article relative to the body portion.

13. The apparatus of claim 11, further comprising a second abutment cooperating to define the channel.

14. The apparatus of claim 13, wherein the first abutment is spaced apart from the second abutment by a slot.

15. The apparatus of claim 14, slot is configured to receive a radially extending member of said medical article.

16. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the interior surfaces of said movable walls comprise chamfered surfaces.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein said chamfered surfaces are configured to contact said medical article, and wherein pressure on said chamfered surfaces causes said movable walls to deform outward to permit passage of said medical article through the longitudinal opening between said movable walls.

18. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein at least a portion of the channel has an arc length of greater than 180 degrees.

19. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein said movable walls are configured to inhibit egress of a medical article secured within the channel.

20. An apparatus for retaining a portion of a medical article, the apparatus comprising:

a body portion comprising;

a channel extending through the body portion, said channel being shaped to retain at least a portion of said medical article; and

a pair of movable walls defining a longitudinal opening, said walls being laterally deformable outward to increase the size of the longitudinal opening, wherein said longitudinal opening provides access to the central channel;

an adhesive disposed upon a surface of the body portion, wherein said adhesive is configured to contact a portion of the medical article to inhibit movement of the medical article relative to the body portion; and

a pair of supports located on the underside of the body portion and on either side of the longitudinal opening.
