Abstract

A respiratory support system for providing respiratory support to a patient comprising an oscillating pump. The oscillating pump pressurizes ambient air to a pressure suitable for delivery to the patient for respiratory support. The system further comprises a sensor and a microprocessor to control the oscillating pump in response to patient breath attempts.

Claims

1. A respiratory support system, for providing respiratory support to a patient, the system comprising:

an inlet for the introduction of medical gas to the system;

an oscillating pump for pressurizing the medical gas to a target pressure;

a conduit for delivering the medical gas to the patient; and

a sensor disposed in the conduit;

wherein the sensor monitors a parameter, the parameter being sent to a microprocessor that controls the oscillating pump in response to changes in the parameter.

2. The respiratory support system of claim 1 wherein the oscillating pump is a pump which oscillates one or more diaphragms multiple strokes per breath delivered to the patient.

3. The respiratory support system of claim 1 wherein the medical gas is air and inlet for the introduction of medical gas to the system is connected to ambient air.

4. The respiratory support system of claim 3 further comprising the addition of a supplemental medical gas.

5. The respiratory support system of claim 4 wherein the supplemental medical gas is an anesthetic agent.

6. The respiratory support system of claim 4 wherein the supplemental medical gas is Oxygen.

7. The respiratory support system of claim 6 wherein the oxygen is added to the air after it has been pressurized by the oscillating pump.

8. The respiratory support system of claim 3 wherein the parameter is the pressure of air within the conduit.

9. The respiratory support system of claim 1 wherein the microprocessor uses a calibration table to interpret the parameter to select a proper duty cycle for the pump.

10. The respiratory support system of claim 1 further comprising a user interface wherein a clinician may use the user interface to modify the parameter.

11. The respiratory support system of claim 1 further comprising a flow oscillation damping means wherein the pressurized medical gas is prepared for delivery to the patient.

13. The system of claim 11 wherein the first conduit is a patient connection.

14. The system of claim 11 further comprising:

a second conduit capable of removing expired air from the patient; and

a second sensor disposed in the second conduit for the detection of the pressure of the air in the second conduit.

15. The system of claim 11 wherein the microprocessor further detects a change in pressure in the system indicative of the patient cycling from the inspiration phase to the expiration phase of the respiratory cycle and directs the pump to provide decreased pressure to the system.

12. A mechanical ventilation system for providing respiratory support to a patient, the system comprising:

an inlet for the introduction of air to the system;

a linear oscillating pump for pressurizing the air to a target pressure;

a first conduit capable of delivering the pressurized air to the patient;

a first sensor disposed in the first conduit proximally to the patient for detection of the pressure in the first conduit; and

a microprocessor for collecting a signal from the sensor and controlling the operation of the linear oscillating pump;

wherein the microprocessor detects a change in pressure in the system indicative of a patient respiration attempt and directs the pump to provide increased pressure for respiration support.

16. A respiratory support system for providing respiratory support to a patient, the system comprising:

an inlet for the introduction of medical gas to the system;

a linear oscillating pump for pressurizing the medical gas;

a conduit for delivering the medical gas to the patient; and

a microprocessor for controlling the pressure generated by the linear oscillating pump;

wherein the microprocessor directs the pump to increase, decrease, or maintain current pressure levels provided to the patient.

17. The respiratory support system of claim 16 wherein the microprocessor controls the linear oscillating pump via a signal to a motor controller.

18. The respiratory support system of claim 17 wherein the motor controller comprises an H-bridge inverter.

19. The respiratory support system of claim 18 wherein the H-bridge inverter comprises MOSFETs.

20. The respiratory support system of claim 19 wherein the AC signal emulated by the motor controller and sent to the pump is a variable voltage magnitude square wave.

21. The respiratory support system of claim 20 wherein the duty cycle of the pulse width modulation signal is indicative of the pressure to be produced by the linear oscillating pump.
