Abstract

Systems and methods for communicating voice and video over a wireless network. A signal, formatted as Internet protocol (VoIP, IPTV, etc.) data, is received from a device. The signal is adapted for a wireless network and then transmitted to the wireless network. Signals are also received from the wireless network and adapted to a IP formatted signal and transmitted to the device. The signals transmitted between the device and the wireless network include voice traffic as well as multimedia and other high bandwidth signals.

Claims

1. A method for transmitting voice over a wireless network, the method comprising:

receiving a signal formatted as a voice over Internet protocol data from a device;

adapting the signal for the wireless network;

transmitting the adapted signal to the wireless network;

receiving a wireless network signal;

adapting the wireless signal to a voice over Internet protocol formatted signal; and

transmitting the voice over Internet protocol formatted signal to the device.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the wireless network is a mesh network, a peer-to-peer network, a multi-hop network, or an ad hoc network.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the wireless network is a combination or network types.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the device comprises a consumer electronic device that has voice or video capability

5. The method of claim 4, wherein the device is a wireless gaming device, an IPTV, or a wireless music player.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the device comprises a Wi-Fi hard-phone or a Wi-Fi soft-phone.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the device comprises a dual-mode phone.

8. The method of claim 1, wherein the wireless network signal comprises voice data.

9. The method of claim 1, wherein the wireless network signal comprise multimedia signals.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the multimedia data is voice, video, or data.

11. The method of claim 1, wherein the wireless network signal comprise high bandwidth signals.

12. A node in a wireless network, comprising:

a topology module adapted to align the node'"'"'s beacon signal with a wireless network;

a signaling module is adapted to send and receive wireless network signals; and

a voice over Internet protocol module adapted to receive signals from a voice over Internet protocol device and to communicate the signals to the signaling module to be transmitted to the wireless network, and to receive signals from the signaling module and to transmit the received signals to the voice over Internet protocol device.

13. The mode of claim 12, wherein the wireless network is a mesh network, a peer-to-peer network, a multi-hop network, or an ad hoc network.

14. The node of claim 12, wherein the voice over Internet protocol module comprises adapting a voice over Internet protocol signal for communication over a mesh network and adapting a mesh network signal for communication to the voice over Internet protocol device.

15. The node of claim 12, wherein the wireless network signals comprise voice data.

16. The node of claim 12, wherein the wireless network signals comprise multimedia signals.

17. The method of claim 12, wherein the wireless network signals comprises high bandwidth signals.

18. A node in a wireless network, comprising:

a topology module adapted to align the node'"'"'s beacon signal with a wireless network;

a signaling module adapted to send and receive mesh network signals; and

an audio module adapted to receive audio signals from an audio input device and to communicate the signals to the signaling module to be transmitted to the wireless network, and to receive signals from the signaling module and to transmit the received signals to an audio output device.

19. The mode of claim 18, wherein the wireless network is a mesh network, a peer-to-peer network, a multi-hop network, or an ad hoc network.

20. The node of claim 18, wherein the audio module comprises an analog to digital converted for digitizing an analog audio signal and adapting the digitized signal for communication to the signaling module.

21. The node of claim 18, wherein the audio module comprises a digital to analog converter for converting a digital signal to an analog signal for communication to an audio output device.

22. The node of claim 18, wherein the audio input device comprises a microphone.

23. The node of claim 18, wherein the audio output device comprises a speaker.

24. The node of claim 18, wherein the wireless network signals comprise voice data.

25. The node of claim 18, wherein the wireless network signals comprise multimedia signals.

26. The node of claim 18, wherein the wireless network signals comprise high bandwidth signals.

27. A node in a mesh network, a peer-to-peer network, a multi-hop network, or an ad hoc network comprising:

means for receiving a signal formatted as a voice over Internet protocol data from a device;

means for adapting the signal for a mesh network;

mean for transmitting the adapted signal to the mesh network;

mean for receiving a mesh network signal;

means for adapting the mesh signal to a voice over Internet protocol formatted signal; and

means for transmitting the voice over Internet protocol formatted signal to the device.

28. A communication device cradle comprising:

a voice over Internet protocol interface adapted to transmit and receive voice over Internet protocol data from a wireless communication device;

a network interface adapted to transmit and receive data with a network, wherein the communication device cradle receives voice over Internet protocol data from the wireless communication device and transmits it to the network and the cradle receives network data from the network and transmits it to the device; and

a device interface configured to receive the wireless communication device and establish electrical communication between the communication device cradle and a wireless communication device.

29. The communication device cradle of claim 28, wherein the wireless communication device is a voice over Internet protocol phone.

30. The communication device cradle of claim 28, further comprising a recharge module configured to recharge a battery of the wireless communication device when the wireless communication device is electrically coupled with the communication device cradle.

31. A method for transmitting voice over a mesh network, a peer-to-peer network, a multi-hop network, or an ad hoc network, the method comprising:

receiving a signal formatted as Bluetooth or UWB data from a device;

adapting the signal for a mesh network;

transmitting the adapted signal to the mesh network;

receiving a mesh network signal;

adapting the mesh signal to a Public Switched Telephone Network (PSTN) formatted signal; and

transmitting the PSTN formatted signal to the device.

32. A node in a wireless mesh network, comprising:

a topology module that aligns the node'"'"'s beacon signal with a mesh network;

a signaling module that sends and receives mesh network signals; and

a Bluetooth module that receives signals from a Bluetooth device and communicates the signals to the signaling module to be transmitted to the mesh network, and receives signals from the signaling module and transmits the received signals to the Bluetooth device.

33. A peer-to-peer network comprising:

at least two wireless communication devices; and

a physical radio link providing direct communication between the at least two wireless communication devices, wherein the at least two wireless communication devices self-organize into a network and exchange data via the radio link.

34. The network of claim 33, wherein the wireless communication devices exchange voice data.

35. The network of claim 33, wherein the wireless communication devices exchange multimedia data.

36. The network of claim 33, further comprising one of the at least two wireless communication devices broadcast data to other devices.

37. The network of claim 33, wherein the physical radio link comprises multiple radio links in succession.

38. A network comprising:

an underlying wireless network;

a logical distribution network comprising logical connections for the distribution of data between nodes, wherein the logical distribution network is overlaid on the underlying wireless network to produce a wireless network for distributing data.

39. The network of claim 38, wherein the underlying wireless network is a mesh network, a peer-to-peer network, a multi-hop network, or an ad hoc network.

40. The network of claim 39, wherein the underlying wireless network is a combination or network types.

41. The network of claim 38, wherein the data is multimedia data.

42. The network of claim 38 wherein the data is video, audio, or music.
