Half-duplex communication system
First Claim
1. A half duplex communication system comprising a first transceiver and a remote second transceiver, said first transceiver being arranged to perform half-duplex communication with said remote second transceiver via a plurality of communication channels, said first transceiver comprising a first receiver, a first transmitter, a switching arrangement arranged to select any one of said channels at a time, and a controller arranged to:
- control said first receiver and said first transmitter to perform a series of communication cycles, each of which comprises at least one first reception period and at least one first transmission period;
control said switching arrangement to change said selected one of said channels in response to completion of each said communication cycle; and
cause said first transmitter to retransmit, in response to an unacceptable reception event, at least part of a message, which was previously transmitted by said first transmitter via one of said channels different from a currently selected one of said channels, said second transceiver comprising;
a second receiver arranged, during second reception periods, to receive via all of said channels simultaneously; and
a second transmitter arranged, during second transmission periods which alternate with said second reception periods, to transmit via all of said channels simultaneously.

Abstract
First and second transceivers are provided for half-duplex communication via a plurality of communication channels, for example by means of antenna diversity. The first transceiver comprises a receiver and transmitter together with a switching arrangement for selecting between two or more channels, for example in the form of antennae disposed at different locations, providing different polarisations or having different beam patterns. A controller controls the switch so that the aerial selection is changed after each receive and transmit period. If the receiver indicates unacceptable reception, for example resulting from the absence of at least part of a packet or the corruption of data within the packet, the transmitter retransmits the packet which it sent in the preceding transmission period via the previously selected antenna.
