Abstract

Methods and apparatus for programming a medical infusion pump are disclosed. One method includes displaying a meter having two or more locations, each of the two or more locations representing a corresponding parameter value programmable into the medical infusion pump. The method further includes displaying an indicator having a selectable positional relationship to the meter, the selected position corresponding to a parameter value.

Claims

1. A method of programming a medical infusion pump comprising:

displaying a meter having two or more locations, each of the two or more locations representing a corresponding parameter value programmable into the medical infusion pump;

displaying an indicator having a selectable positional relationship to the meter, the selected position corresponding to a parameter value.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising downloading the parameter value to the medical infusion pump.

3. The method of claim 1, further comprising displaying the parameter value.

4. The method of claim 3, wherein displaying the parameter value includes displaying a numerical value.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the two or more locations include a continuous range of parameter values.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein the meter is a slider bar.

7. The method of claim 6, wherein the indicator is a pointer positionable along the slider bar.

8. The method of claim 6, wherein the slider bar includes a warning region located along at least a portion of the slider bar.

9. The method of claim 8, further comprising issuing an alert when the pointer is located at a position in the warning region.

10. The method of claim 9, wherein the alert is a flag set in software included in the medical infusion pump.

11. The method of claim 9, wherein the alert is an audible alarm.

12. The method of claim 9, wherein the alert is a visual indicator displayed on the medical infusion pump.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the visual indicator is a changed color on at least a portion of a display associated to the medical infusion pump.

14. The method of claim 12, wherein the visual indicator is a flashing color on at least a portion of a display associated to the medical infusion pump.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein the visual indicator is a changing color on at least a portion of a display associated to the medical infusion pump.

21. The apparatus of claim 1, wherein the meter is a slider bar.

16. An apparatus for programming a medical infusion pump comprising:

a memory configured to store at least two parameter values programmable into the medical infusion pump;

a monitor;

a programmable circuit in electrical communication with the memory and the monitor, the programmable circuit programmed to;

display on the monitor a meter having two or more locations, each of the two or more locations representing a corresponding parameter value programmable into the medical infusion pump;

display an indicator having a selectable positional relationship to the meter, the selected position corresponding to a parameter value.

17. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to download the parameter value to the medical infusion pump.

18. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to display the parameter value.

19. The apparatus of claim 18, wherein the parameter value includes a numerical value.

20. The apparatus of claim 16, wherein the two or more locations include a continuous range of parameter values.

22. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein the indicator is a pointer positionable along the slider bar.

23. The apparatus of claim 20, wherein the slider bar includes a warning region located along at least a portion of the slider bar.

24. The apparatus of claim 22, wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to issue an alert when the pointer is located at a position in the warning region.

25. A method of programming a medical infusion pump comprising:

displaying a slider bar having a plurality of locations, each of the plurality of locations representing a corresponding parameter value programmable into the medical infusion pump, the slider bar including a warning region located along a portion of the slider bar;

displaying an indicator movable along the slider bar to a selected position, the selected position corresponding to a parameter value;

downloading the parameter value to the medical infusion pump; and

upon detection of movement of the indicator to a position within the warning region, issuing an alert.

26. A method of programming a medical infusion pump comprising:

setting one or more hard limits to define a range of permissible parameter values for programming a medical infusion pump;

displaying a meter having two or more locations, each of the two or more locations representing a corresponding parameter value within the range;

displaying an indicator having a positional relationship to the meter, the position corresponding to a parameter value within the range.

27. The method of claim 26, wherein the positional relationship between the indicator and the meter is selectable and defines the parameter value to be programmed into the medical infusion pump.

28. The method of claim 26, wherein the meter is a slider bar.

29. The method of claim 28, wherein the hard limits define ends of the slider bar.

30. The method of claim 28, further comprising setting one or more soft limits to define a second range within the first range, wherein the portion of the first range not within the second range comprises a warning region located along at least a portion of the slider bar.

31. The method of claim 30, further comprising issuing an alert when the pointer is located at a position in the warning region.

32. An apparatus for programming a medical infusion pump comprising:

a memory configured to store at least two parameter values programmable into the medical infusion pump and one or more hard limits;

a monitor;

a programmable circuit in electrical communication with the memory and the monitor, the programmable circuit programmed to;

set one or more hard limits to define a range of permissible parameter values for programming a medical infusion pump;

display on the monitor a meter having two or more locations, each of the two or more locations representing a corresponding parameter value within the range;

display on the monitor an indicator having a positional relationship to the meter, the position corresponding to a parameter value within the range.

33. The apparatus of claim 32, wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to allow selectable adjustment of the positional relationship between the indicator and the meter to define the parameter value to be programmed into the medical infusion pump.

34. The apparatus of claim 32, wherein the meter is a slider bar.

35. The apparatus of claim 34, wherein the memory is further configured to store one or more soft limits defining a second range within the first range and the programmable circuit is further programmed to issue an alert if the parameter value is within the first range and not the second range.

36. The apparatus of claim 35, wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to issue an alert when the pointer is located at a position in the warning region.

37. The apparatus of claim 35, wherein the programmable circuit is further programmed to display the meter using a graphical user interface associable with one or more types of medical infusion pumps.
