Abstract

Systems and methods for round-trip-delay adjustment in a multipoint-to-point orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) system are provided. In one embodiment, a method for multipoint-to-point communication comprises: receiving at a host a plurality of upstream symbols transmitted from a plurality of remote units, the upstream symbols transmitted on a plurality of orthogonal carriers modulated using an inverse Fourier transform; and determining respective round trip path delay values associated with each of at least two of the plurality of remote units.

Claims

1. A method for multipoint-to-point communication, the method comprising:

receiving at a host a plurality of upstream symbols transmitted from a plurality of remote units, the upstream symbols transmitted on a plurality of orthogonal carriers modulated using an inverse Fourier transform; and

determining respective round trip path delay values associated with each of at least two of the plurality of remote units.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

reducing any differences between at least two round trip path delay values by instructing at least one of the plurality of remote units to adjust a delay.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein reducing any differences between at least two path delay values converges the at least two path delay values together with respect to a target average path delay value.

4. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

reducing any difference between at least two path delay values based on a target average path delay value.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein the inverse Fourier transform is based on one of an inverse Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and an inverse Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT).

6. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

determining a value that represents an elapsed time between sending a first signal to a remote unit and receiving a second signal from the remote unit in response to the first signal.

7. A system comprising:

a plurality of remote units; and

a host unit communicatively coupled to the plurality of remote units in a multipoint-to-point configuration, the host unit receiving an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing waveform comprising a plurality of orthogonal carriers modulated using an inverse Fourier transform;

the host unit programmed to calculate a round trip delay time value for each of at least two of the plurality of remote units, the round trip delay time value representing an elapsed time between transmitting a first signal to a remote unit and receiving a second signal from the remote unit in response to the first signal; and

the host unit programmed to transmit one or more timing adjustments to each of the at least two of the plurality of remote units to delay upstream transmissions based on the respective round trip path delay values associated with each of the at least two of the plurality of remote units.

8. The system of claim 7, the host unit further programmed to reduce a difference between at least two round trip delay time values by instructing at least one of the plurality of remote units to adjust a delay.

9. The system of claim 7, the host unit further programmed to reduce any difference between at least two round trip delay time values based on a target round trip delay time value.

10. The system of claim 9, wherein the target round trip delay time value is the same for each of the plurality of remote units.

11. The system of claim 7, wherein the inverse Fourier transform is based on one of an inverse Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and an inverse Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT).

12. A method for an orthogonal frequency division multiplexing (OFDM) multipoint-to-point communications system, the method comprising:

establishing communication between a first remote unit of a plurality of remote units and a host unit, the plurality of remote units communicatively coupled to the host unit in a multipoint-to-point configuration using a coherent OFDM waveform having a plurality of orthogonal carriers, the plurality orthogonal carriers modulated using an inverse Fourier transform;

wherein an upstream signal on a first orthogonal carrier from the first remote unit combines with an upstream signal on a second orthogonal carrier from at least one other remote unit to form the coherent OFDM waveform; and

adjusting the timing of at least one signal transmitted between the first remote unit and the host unit based on a round trip delay.

13. The method of claim 12, wherein the inverse Fourier transform is based on one of an inverse Fast Fourier Transform (FFT) and an inverse Discrete Fourier Transform (DFT).

14. The method of claim 12, further comprising:

determining a trip delay time value representing an elapsed time between transmitting a first signal to a remote unit and receiving a second signal from the remote unit in response to the first signal, the round trip delay based on the trip delay time value.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein spacing between orthogonal carriers of the coherent OFDM waveform is based on a reciprocal of a symbol period.
