Abstract

Methods and arrangements to check for permission to record Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) messages and to respond to requests for permission are contemplated. Embodiments include transformations, code, state machines or other logic to check for permission to record VoIP messages and to respond to requests by transmitting an inquiry on permission to record a VoIP message of a participant in a VoIP call session comprising the VoIP message, receiving a response to the inquiry, determining by a processor whether the response to the inquiry grants permission to record the VoIP message, and recording the VoIP message based upon the response to the inquiry granting permission to record the VoIP message. Some embodiments may involve querying a participant in a VoIP call session comprising a VoIP message for permission to record the VoIP message through a user interface mechanism for checking for permission to record VoIP messages.

Claims

1. A method to check for permission to record Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) messages, the method comprising

transmitting an inquiry on permission to record a VoIP message of a participant in a VoIP call session comprising the VoIP message;

receiving a response to the inquiry;

determining by a processor that the response to the inquiry grants permission to record the VoIP message; and

recording the VoIP message based upon the response to the inquiry.

2. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

receiving a command to record another VoIP message;

transmitting an inquiry on permission to record the other VoIP message of a participant in a VoIP call session comprising the other VoIP message;

receiving a response to the inquiry on permission to record the other VoIP message;

determining by the processor that the response to the inquiry on permission to record the other VoIP message denies permission to record the other VoIP message; and

deleting the VoIP message based upon the response to the inquiry.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the VoIP call session comprises a plurality of VoIP messages;

the receiving comprises receiving permission to record a group of VoIP messages from the plurality of VoIP messages, the group consisting of some, but not all, of the plurality of VoIP messages; and

the recording comprises recording the group of VoIP messages.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the transmitting comprises transmitting the inquiry on permission in response to receiving a command to record the VoIP message.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein:

the transmitting comprises transmitting a request for permission to record a VoIP message;

the receiving comprises receiving a response to the request;

the determining comprises determining by a processor that the response to the request grants permission to record the VoIP message; and

the recording comprises recording the VoIP message based upon the response to the request.

6. The method of claim 1, wherein:

rules on permission to record apply to a participant in the VoIP call session;

the transmitting comprises transmitting an inquiry to examine the rules on permission to record; and

the determining comprises determining by a processor based upon the rules on permission.

7. A method to generate responses to inquiries on permission to record VoIP messages, the method comprising:

receiving an inquiry on the permission of a participant in a VoIP call session comprising a VoIP message to record the VoIP message;

querying the participant for permission to record the VoIP message through a user interface mechanism for checking for permission to record VoIP messages;

receiving a reply from the participant;

generating a response to the request for permission to record the VoIP message based upon the reply from the participant; and

transmitting the response.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein:

the user interface mechanism constitutes a pop-up menu; and

the querying and the receiving the reply comprise generating the pop-up menu and receiving through the pop-up menu the reply from the participant.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein:

the receiving a reply comprises receiving preferences on responding to requests to record VoIP messages; and

the generating a response comprises generating a response based upon the preferences.

10. An apparatus to check for permission to record Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) messages, the apparatus comprising:

a permission requestor to transmit inquiries for permission to record VoIP messages of participants in VoIP call sessions comprising the VoIP messages, to receive responses to the inquiries, and to determine whether the responses to the inquiries grant permission to record the VoIP messages; and

a call storage module to record the VoIP messages based upon the responses granting permission to record the VoIP messages.

The apparatus of claim 10, further comprising a permission grantor to receive requests for the permission of participants in VoIP call sessions comprising VoIP messages to record the VoIP messages, to query the participants for permission to record the VoIP message through a user interface mechanism for checking for permission to record VoIP messages, to receive a reply from the participants, to generate responses to the requests for permission to record the VoIP messages based upon the replies from the participants, and to transmit the responses.

12. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the call storage module is configured to store evidence of the grants of permission to record the VoIP messages.

13. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein:

the VoIP call sessions comprise pluralities of VoIP messages;

the permission requestor is configured to receiving permission to record groups of VoIP messages from the pluralities of VoIP messages, a group consisting of some, but not all, of a plurality of VoIP messages; and

the call storage module is configured to record the groups of VoIP messages.

14. The apparatus of claim 10, wherein the permission requester is configured to generate requests for permission in response to receiving requests to record VoIP messages.

15. A computer program product comprising a computer useable medium having a computer readable program, wherein the computer readable program when executed on a computer causes the computer to:

transmit an inquiry on permission to record a VoIP message of a participant in a VoIP call session comprising the VoIP message;

receive a response to the inquiry;

determine by a processor that the response to the inquiry grants permission to record the VoIP message; and

record the VoIP message based upon the response to the inquiry.

16. The computer program product of claim 15, wherein the computer readable program when executed on a computer further causes the computer to:

receive a command to record another VoIP message;

transmit an inquiry on permission to record the other VoIP message of a participant in a VoIP call session comprise the other VoIP message;

receive a response to the inquiry on permission to record the other VoIP message;

determine by the processor that the response to the inquiry on permission to record the other VoIP message denies permission to record the other VoIP message; and

delete the VoIP message based upon the response to the inquiry.

17. The computer program product of claim 15, wherein the computer readable program when executed on a computer further causes the computer to store evidence of the grant of permission to record the VoIP message.

18. The computer program product of claim 15, wherein the receiving comprises:

querying the participant for permission to record the VoIP message through a user interface mechanism for checking for permission to record VoIP messages;

receiving a reply from the participant;

generating a response to the inquiry on permission to record the VoIP message based upon the reply from the participant;

transmitting the response; and

receiving the response.

19. The computer program product of claim 18, wherein:

the user interface mechanism constitutes a pop-up menu; and

the querying and the receiving the reply comprise generating the pop-up menu and receiving through the pop-up menu the reply from the participant.

20. The computer program product of claim 15, wherein the computer useable medium comprises a transmission medium.
