Abstract

An interactive map web-based tool is provided which gives the user the ability to customize their use of a map. The present invention includes a customized overlay of point of interest information on an existing map. The information overlay includes icons, drop down lists, information panels, advertising content, pop-up windows and hypertext links which are associated with points of interest, where each point of interest is associated with a class. Drop down lists permit the user to display one or more points of interest by location or class. Visual cues, including color coding, icon shaping and text differentiation for different classes of points of interest allow a user of the map to quickly differentiate area resources. With such an arrangement a traveler can easily select for display only those particular resources that are of interest to the traveler and thereby create a local search experience focused on their specific travel needs.

Claims

1. A method for displaying to a user a point of interest on a map of an area, wherein a displayed portion of the map is displayed to the user via a graphical user interface, wherein the method includes the steps of:

providing a list of points of interest to a user;

receiving a selection of the point of interest from the user; and

displaying a location icon at a location on the displayed portion of the map associated with the selected point of interest.

2. The method of claim 1 including the steps of:

receiving a second point of interest from the user; and

displaying the location icon at a second location on the displayed portion of the map associated with the second point of interest.

3. The method of claim 1 including the step of modifying the displayed portion of the map so that the location icon is centered in the displayed portion of the map.

4. The method of claim 1 further including the step of:

displaying a ‘

you are here’

link to the user;

determining that the ‘

you are here’

link has been selected; and

displaying a pop up window proximate to the location icon.

5. The method of claim 4 wherein the pop up window comprises an address of the point of interest associated with the location icon.

6. The method of claim 1 further comprising:

providing a list of a plurality of classes of points of interest to the user;

receiving a selection of a class of points of interest from the user;

identifying a plurality of points of interest associated with the class; and

displaying on the portion of the map a class specific icon for each point of interest associated with the class, wherein the class specific icon is displayed with the location specific icon to enable the user to identify points of interest that are proximate to the location icon.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein each class is associated with a different icon.

8. The method of claim 7 wherein each icon of each class differs in color from other icons of other classes.

9. The method of claim 6 wherein a subset of icons from a subset of classes differ in shape from other icons of other classes.

10. The method of claim 7 wherein each icon of each class includes a label associated with the respective class.

11. A web page server comprising:

program code stored in a computer readable medium for populating an interactive area guide web page comprising;

an icon control section comprising;

a point of interest list object comprising a plurality of point of interests;

a class of point of interest list object comprising a plurality of classes of point of interests; and

a map, wherein a user customizes placement of point of interest icons on the map by selecting one of a point of interest and a class of points of interest from the associated one of the point of interest list object and class of point of interest list object.

12. The web page server of claim 11 wherein the web page further comprises an information panel, and wherein the information panel is populated by selection of classes of points of interest from the class of point of interest list object.

13. The web page server of claim 11 wherein at least one of the point of interest list object and class of point of interest list object comprises a drop down list.

14. The web page server of claim 11 wherein each point of interest icon is customized according to a class of the point of interest icon.

15. The web page server of claim 14 wherein at least one class comprises a sub-class and wherein point of interest icons are customized according to class and sub-class.

16. The web page server of claim 11 further comprising a you are here hyperlink which, when selected, identifies a location of a you are here icon on the map.

17. The web page server of claim 16 wherein the selection of the hyperlink generates a pop up window at the you are here icon location, the pop up window including an address of the you are here icon.

18. The web page server of claim 11 wherein the plurality of classes of points of service include at least two of Attractions, Aquariums, Auction Houses, Concert Halls, Galleries, Getting Around (Public Information sites), Libraries, Hotels, Movie Theaters, Museums, Nightclubs, Services, Shopping, Sightseeing, Sport Arenas, Theaters, Visitor Info and Zoos.
