Abstract

A graphical user interface includes a scrollbar located centrally between two panes displaying interactive content. Moving the scrollbar causes movement of the content in both panes to scroll. The panes include additional content regions (represented, for example, by an image or color) located near the scrollbar. Selecting one of the additional content regions, such as by holding a mouse cursor over it, causes additional content to be displayed. The additional content may include links and an additional scrollbar for scrolling within the additional content.

Claims

1. A computer-implemented method comprising:

(A) displaying a rendering of content, the rendering including a first pane including a rendering of first pane content and a second pane including a rendering of second pane content;

(B) displaying a first movement-control element;

(C) receiving input from a user directed to the first movement-control element; and

(D) moving the rendering of the first pane content and the rendering of the second pane content in response to the input.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein the content comprises a web page, and wherein displaying the rendering of the content comprises displaying the rendering of the content in a web browser window.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the first pane comprises a first frame in the web browser window, and wherein the second pane comprises a second frame in the web browser window.

4. The method of claim 1, wherein the first movement-control element comprises a slider bar.

5. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

(E) moving the first movement-control element in response to the input.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein (D) comprises moving the renderings of the first and second pane contents in a first direction, and wherein (E) comprises moving the first movement-control element in a second direction substantially opposite to the first direction.

7. The method of claim 5, wherein (A) comprises displaying the first pane and second pane on opposing sides of the first movement-control element, and wherein (E) comprises moving the first movement control element within a gap between the first and second panes.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein (A) comprises displaying links to additional content within the first pane and second pane near the first movement-control element.

9. The method of claim 5, wherein each of the first and second panes is substantially rectangular, and wherein the dimensions of the first pane are substantially the same as the dimensions of the second pane.

10. The method of claim 5, wherein the first and second panes are not adjacent to each other.

11. The method of claim 1, further comprising:

(C) displaying a rendering of first linking content within the first pane and substantially adjacent to the first movement-control element, wherein the first linking content links to first linked-to content.

12. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

(D) displaying a rendering of second linking content within the second pane and substantially adjacent to the first movement-control element, wherein the second linking content links to second linked-to content.

13. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

(F) receiving input from the user selecting the first linking content; and

(G) in response to the input received in (F), displaying a rendering of the first linked-to content over the first pane.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein (F) comprises receiving an indication of a mouseover event having the first linking content as its object.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein the rendering of the first linking content and the rendering of the second linking content are of equal size.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein the rendering of the first linked-to content has an area that is an integer multiple of the area of the rendering of the first linking content.

17. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

(H) displaying a rendering of third linking content within the rendering of the first linked-to content, wherein the third linking content links to third linked-to content.

18. The method of claim 13, further comprising:

(H) in response to the input received in (F), changing a visual feature of the rendering of the first linking content to indicate that the user has selected the first linking content.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein (F) comprises receiving an indication of a mouseover event having the first linking content as its object.

20. The method of claim 11, further comprising:

(F) displaying a second movement-control element within the first pane, wherein the second movement-control element is responsive to user input to move the rendering of the first linking content.

21. The method of claim 1, wherein the first movement-control element is adjacent to the first pane and the second pane.

22. An apparatus comprising:

content display means for displaying a rendering of content, the rendering including a first pane including a rendering of first pane content and a second pane including a rendering of second pane content;

control display means for displaying a first movement-control element;

input means for receiving input from a user directed to the first movement-control element; and

movement means for moving the rendering of the first pane content and the rendering of the second pane content in response to the input.

23. A computer-implemented method comprising:

(A) displaying a rendering of a web page, the rendering including a first frame including a rendering of first frame content and a second frame including a rendering of second frame content, wherein each of the first and second frames is substantially rectangular, and wherein the first frame has dimensions that are substantially the same as dimensions of the second frame;

(B) displaying a slider bar between and adjacent to the first and second frames;

(C) receiving input from a user directed to the slider bar; and

(D) moving the rendering of the first frame content and the rendering of the second frame content in response to the input.

24. The method of claim 23, further comprising:

(E) displaying a rendering of first linking content within the first frame and substantially adjacent to the slider bar, wherein the first linking content links to first linked-to content;

(F) receiving input from the user selecting the first linking content, the input comprising an indication of a mouseover event having the first linking content as its object; and

(G) in response to the input received in (F), displaying a rendering of the first linked-to content over the first frame.

26. An apparatus comprising:

content display means for displaying a rendering of a web page, the rendering including a first frame including a rendering of first frame content and a second frame including a rendering of second frame content, wherein each of the first and second frames is substantially rectangular, and wherein the first frame has dimensions that are substantially the same as dimensions of the second frame;

control means for displaying a slider bar between and adjacent to the first and second frames;

input means for receiving input from a user directed to the slider bar; and

movement means for moving the rendering of the first frame content and the rendering of the second frame content in response to the input.
