1. A mobile communication system comprising:
- a plurality of base station apparatus each for forming a cell for connecting to a terminal through a wireless link;
core network apparatus for separately managing an idle mode service area in which a terminal in an idle mode, in which the terminal is not communicating, can be connected, and an active mode service area in which a terminal in an active mode, in which the terminal is communicating, can be connected, said active mode service area being wider than said idle mode service area, with respect to respective cells of said base station apparatus, keeping itself connected to a terminal in the idle mode which is connected to the core network apparatus through a base station apparatus in said idle mode service area as long as said terminal in the idle mode is located in said idle mode service area, and keeping itself connected to a terminal in the active mode which is connected to the core network apparatus through a base station apparatus in said active mode service area as long as said terminal in the active mode is located in said active mode service area; and
a terminal for, when moved beyond the border of the idle mode service area while in said idle mode, switching its connection from a core network apparatus which is managing the idle mode service area as a source to a core network apparatus which is managing the idle mode service area as a destination, and, when moved beyond the border of the active mode service area while in said active mode, switching its connection from a core network apparatus which is managing the active mode service area as a source to a core network apparatus which is managing the active mode service area as a destination.

Abstract
A mobile communication system for relaying user data includes a plurality of base station apparatus and a core network apparatus. Each of the base station apparatus forms a cell for connecting to a terminal through a wireless link. The core network apparatus can be connected to the base station apparatus. Even when the terminal moves between the base station apparatus while the terminal is in an active mode in which the terminal is communicating, the core network apparatus which is connected to the terminal keeps itself connected to the terminal.

a plurality of base station apparatus each for forming a cell for connecting to a terminal through a wireless link; core network apparatus for separately managing an idle mode service area in which a terminal in an idle mode, in which the terminal is not communicating, can be connected, and an active mode service area in which a terminal in an active mode, in which the terminal is communicating, can be connected, said active mode service area being wider than said idle mode service area, with respect to respective cells of said base station apparatus, keeping itself connected to a terminal in the idle mode which is connected to the core network apparatus through a base station apparatus in said idle mode service area as long as said terminal in the idle mode is located in said idle mode service area, and keeping itself connected to a terminal in the active mode which is connected to the core network apparatus through a base station apparatus in said active mode service area as long as said terminal in the active mode is located in said active mode service area; and a terminal for, when moved beyond the border of the idle mode service area while in said idle mode, switching its connection from a core network apparatus which is managing the idle mode service area as a source to a core network apparatus which is managing the idle mode service area as a destination, and, when moved beyond the border of the active mode service area while in said active mode, switching its connection from a core network apparatus which is managing the active mode service area as a source to a core network apparatus which is managing the active mode service area as a destination. - View Dependent Claims (2, 3, 4, 5)

6. A mobile communication system for relaying user data, comprising:

a plurality of base station apparatus each for forming a cell for connecting to a terminal through a wireless link; and a core network apparatus for being connected to said base station apparatus; wherein even when the terminal moves between the base station apparatus while the terminal is in an active mode in which the terminal is communicating, the core network apparatus which is connected to the terminal keeps itself connected to said terminal.

a service area information storage for separately managing the information of an idle mode service area in which a terminal in an idle mode, in which the terminal is not communicating, can be connected, and the information of an active mode service area in which a terminal in an active mode, in which the terminal is communicating, can be connected, said active mode service area being wider than said idle mode service area, with respect to respective cells of said base station apparatus; and a connection controller for keeping the core network apparatus connected to a terminal in the idle mode which is connected to the core network apparatus through a base station apparatus in said idle mode service area as long as said terminal in the idle mode is located in said idle mode service area, and keeping the core network apparatus connected to a terminal in the active mode which is connected to the core network apparatus through a base station apparatus in said active mode service area as long as said terminal in the active mode is located in said active mode service area. - View Dependent Claims (8, 9, 10)

a state manager for managing whether the mobile communication terminal is in the idle mode or in the active mode; and a connection controller for, when the mobile communication terminal moves beyond the border of the idle mode service area while it is in the idle mode as managed by said state manager, switching the connection from a core network apparatus which is managing the idle mode service area as a source to a core network apparatus which is managing the idle mode service area as a destination, and, when the mobile communication terminal moves beyond the border of the active mode service area while in said active mode as managed by said state manager, switching the connection from a core network apparatus which is managing the active mode service area as a source to a core network apparatus which is managing the active mode service area as a destination. - View Dependent Claims (12)

A user plane entity switching method for switching a user plane entity to which a terminal is to be connected, in a mobile communication system including a plurality of base stations each for forming a cell for connecting to the terminal through a wireless link, wherein the terminal is connected to the user plane entity through the base stations, said user plane entity switching method comprising:

separately managing an idle mode service area in which a terminal in an idle mode, in which the terminal is not communicating, can be connected, and an active mode service area in which a terminal in an active mode, in which the terminal is communicating, can be connected, said active mode service area being wider than said idle mode service area, with respect to respective cells of said base stations; keeping said terminal and said user plane entity connected to each other as long as the terminal in the idle mode is located in said idle mode service area of any user plane entity; when the terminal in the idle mode moves beyond the border of the idle mode service area, switching the connection of said terminal from a user plane entity which is managing the idle mode service area as a source to a user plane entity which is managing the idle mode service area as a destination; keeping said terminal and said user plane entity connected to each other as long as the terminal in the active mode is located in said active mode service area of any user plane entity; and when the terminal in the active mode moves beyond the border of the active mode service area, switching the connection of said terminal from a user plane entity which is managing the active mode service area as a source to a user plane entity which is managing the active mode service area as a destination.

A connection control method for a mobile communication system for relaying user data with a plurality of base station apparatus each for forming a cell for connecting to a terminal through a wireless link and a user plane entity connectable to said base station apparatus, said connection control method comprising:
keeping the user plane entity which is connected to said terminal, connected to said terminal even when the terminal moves between said base station apparatus while in an active mode in which the terminal is communicating.
