Abstract

A system and method detects an amount of data attributed to a device including reports sent to the device, and reduces the amount of data being used to provide reports to the device if the amount of data attributed to the device exceeds an amount assigned to the device. Data uploaded from the device is also minimized.

Claims

1. A method of providing information over a communication network, comprising:

providing a plurality of versions of the information, each version comprising a different amount of information;

identifying an amount of prior usage of the communication network by a device;

responsive to the amount of prior usage of the communication network by the device, selecting one of the plurality of versions of the information; and

providing to the device the selected one of the plurality of versions of the information.

2. The method of claim 1, wherein one of the plurality of versions of information contains no information about a plurality of components described by another at least one of the plurality of versions of information.

3. The method of claim 2, wherein the components comprise residential roads.

4. The method of claim 2 wherein the components comprise all roads outside of a geographic area.

5. The method of claim 1, wherein one of the plurality of versions of information contains less detailed information about a plurality of components described by another at least one of the plurality of versions of information.

6. The method of claim 5, wherein the less detailed information in at least one of the plurality of versions comprises summary information about each of a plurality of sets of a plurality of the components, each of the components being separately described in another at least one of the plurality of versions of the information.

7. The method of claim 1, wherein the information in each of the versions comprises differences from another set of information.

8. The method of claim 7, wherein the other set of information comprises measured norms.

9. The method of claim 7, wherein the other set of information is responsive to instructions from a government agency.

10. The method of claim 7, wherein the other set of information comprises information previously provided for the same purpose as the one of the plurality of versions of information provided.
