Abstract

The present disclosure relates generally to devices and methods for use with cardiac defects, more particularly, the present disclosure relates to a device including a frame defining a lumen, where the frame expands from a first configuration to a second configuration larger than the first configuration. The device also includes an anchoring member extending from the frame to secure the frame while in the second configuration and a plug portion of the frame to occlude at least a portion of the lumen.

Claims

1. A device, comprising:

a frame defining a lumen, wherein the frame expands from a first configuration to a second configuration larger than the first configuration;

an anchoring member extending from the frame to secure the frame while in the second configuration; and

a plug portion, wherein the plug portion of the frame occludes at least a portion of the lumen.

2. The device of claim 1, wherein the frame includes a first expandable ring and a second expandable ring having a plurality of fibers extending between the rings, wherein the plurality of fibers form the plug portion to occlude at least a portion of the lumen.

3. The device of claim 2, wherein the plurality of fibers is woven.

4. The device of claim 2, wherein the plurality of fibers is non-woven.

5. The device of claim 2, wherein the plurality of fibers can intertwine to provide the plug portion.

6. The device of claim 2, wherein the plurality of fibers can collapse to provide the plug portion.

7. The device of claim 2, wherein the first expandable ring and the second expandable ring are formed of a material that allows the first expandable ring and the second expandable ring to be self-expandable.

8. The device of claim 1, wherein the plug portion is a filter coupled to an inside perimeter of the frame.

9. The device of claim 1, wherein the frame includes a first end portion, a second end portion, and a middle portion, wherein the first end portion and second end portion in the second configuration have a larger perimeter than the middle portion in the second configuration.

10. The device of claim 1, wherein the plug portion is a cross-linkable polymer, and is positioned inside the frame.

11. The device of claim 1, further including a delivery catheter to provide for a delivery system.

12. The device of claim 1, wherein the device is formed of a first piece including the anchoring member extending from the frame and a second piece including the plug portion, and the first piece is coupled to the second piece.

13. A method, comprising:

positioning a device in a body passage through which blood can flow;

expanding the device to secure the device to the body passage;

occluding the body passage with a plug portion of the device to occlude the flow of blood through the body passage.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein expanding the device to secure the device to the body passage further comprises:

expanding a first expandable ring of the device to secure the first expandable ring to the body passage;

applying a torque to a second expandable ring of the device to coil a portion of the frame to form the plug portion; and

expanding the second expandable ring of the device to secure the second expandable ring to the body passage.

15. The method of claim 13, wherein expanding the device to secure the device to the body passage includes:

expanding a first expandable ring of the device to secure the first expandable ring to the body passage;

compressing a frame of the device to collapse a portion of the frame to form the plug portion; and

expanding a second expandable ring of the device to secure the second expandable ring to the body passage.

16. The method of claim 13, wherein occluding the body passage with a plug portion of the device includes injecting a cross-linkable polymer into the device to form the plug portion, where the device includes a mesh frame to contain the plug portion.

17. The method of claim 13, wherein occluding the body passage with a plug portion of the device includes coupling a filter to an inside perimeter of a frame of the device to form the plug portion of the device.

18. The method of claim 13, wherein expanding the device to secure the device to the body passage further includes expanding a first end portion, a second end portion, and a middle portion of the device to an expanded configuration where the first end portion and second end portion have a larger perimeter than the middle portion.

19. A method, comprising:

forming a frame defining a lumen, wherein the frame can expand from a first configuration to a second configuration larger than the first configuration;

forming an anchoring member extending from the frame; and

providing for a plug portion in the lumen of the frame, wherein the plug can occlude at least a portion of the lumen.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein forming the frame includes providing a first expandable ring, a second expandable ring, and a plurality of fibers extending between the rings.

21. The method of claim 20, wherein providing for the plug portion further includes intertwining the plurality of fibers to form the plug portion.

22. The method of claim 20, wherein providing for the plug portion further includes collapsing the plurality of fibers to form the plug portion.

23. The method of claim 19, wherein providing for the plug portion further includes coupling a filter to an inside perimeter of the frame to form the plug portion.

24. The method of claim 29, wherein providing for the plug portion further includes injecting a cross-linkable polymer into the frame to form the plug portion.
