Abstract

A surgical fastener applying apparatus including an anvil half-section having a distal end and a longitudinal axis; a cartridge receiving half-section having a distal end and operatively couplable with the anvil half-section such that the distal ends of the half-sections are in juxtaposed relation; and a deflection control system operatively engaged with and reinforcing the distal end of the anvil half-section when a force is applied to the distal end of the anvil half-section in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis.

49. A surgical fastener applying apparatus, comprising:

an anvil half-section defining a longitudinal axis and a tissue contacting surface, the anvil half-section including a distal end, a proximal end, and side walls having a height;

a cartridge receiving half-section including a distal end, the cartridge receiving half-section being operatively couplable with the anvil half-section such that the distal end of the anvil half-section is in juxtaposed relation to the distal end of the cartridge receiving half-section; and

a deflection control system operatively associated with the anvil half-section, wherein the deflection control system reinforces the distal end of the anvil half-section when a force is applied to the distal end of the anvil half-section in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis and normal to a plane defined by the tissue contacting surface of the anvil half-section, a proximal end of the deflection control system extending proximally to at least a pivot point for the anvil half-section and the cartridge receiving half-section, the deflection control system including at least one reinforcing member defining a height and being disposed in the distal end of the anvil half-section, the reinforcing member including a plurality of plates each defining a thickness wherein the thickness of at least one of the plurality of plates is different from the thickness of at least one other plate.

50. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 49, wherein each of the plurality of plates defines a thickness that is different from one another.

51. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 49, wherein each of the plurality of plates defines an axial dimension, wherein the axial dimension of at least one of the plurality of plates is different from the axial dimension of at least one other plate.

52. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 49, wherein the proximal end of each plate extends proximally beyond the pivot point.

53. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 49, wherein a proximal end of each plate is secured to the anvil half-section.

54. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 49, further including a pair of juxtaposed shoulders each extending from an inner surface of the side walls of the anvil half-section at the distal end thereof, each shoulder including a body portion defining a height that is different from the height of the at least one reinforcing member.

55. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 54, wherein the height of the body portion is greater than the height of the reinforcing member.

56. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 54, wherein the height of the body portion is less than the height of the reinforcing member.

57. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 54, wherein each shoulder includes a head portion configured to overlie the at least one reinforcing member.

58. A surgical fastener applying apparatus, comprising:

an anvil half-section defining a tissue contacting surface, the anvil half-section including a distal end, a proximal end that defines a longitudinal axis, and an anvil half-section channel member defining a length and having a substantially U-shaped configuration, the channel member including a first pair of side walls interconnected by a first base wall;

a cartridge receiving half-section including a distal end, the cartridge receiving half-section being operatively couplable with the anvil half-section such that the distal end of the anvil half-section is in juxtaposed relation to the distal end of the cartridge receiving half-section; and

a deflection control system operatively associated with the anvil half-section channel member, the deflection control system including a channel section having a substantially U-shaped configuration and including a second pair of side walls defining a length and being interconnected by a second base wall, the first pair of side walls of the anvil half-section and the second pair of side walls defining a reveal having a height therebetween, a proximal end of the deflection control system extending proximally to at least a pivot point for the anvil half-section and the cartridge receiving half-section.

59. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 58, wherein the proximal end of the deflection control system extends proximally beyond the pivot point.

60. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 58, wherein the second pair of side walls define a height that is substantially uniform along their length such that the height of the reveal is substantially uniform along the length of the channel member.

61. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 58, wherein the second pair of side walls define a height that is variable along their length such that the height of the reveal is variable along the length of the channel member.

62. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 61, wherein the height of the reveal is tapered in the proximal direction.

63. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 61, wherein the height of the reveal is tapered in the distal direction.

64. The surgical fastener applying apparatus of claim 63, wherein the height of the reveal is approximately zero at the distal end of the anvil half-section.

65. A method of assembling a surgical fastener applying apparatus comprising the steps of:

providing an anvil half-section defining a longitudinal axis and a tissue contacting surface;

providing a cartridge receiving half-section being operatively connectable with the anvil half-section such that a distal end of the anvil half-section is in juxtaposed relation to a distal end of the cartridge receiving half-section;

providing a deflection control system operatively connectable with the anvil half-section, a proximal end of the deflection control system extending proximally to at least a pivot point for the anvil half-section and the cartridge receiving half-section, the deflection control system including at least one reinforcing member disposed in the distal end of the anvil half-section; and

connecting the deflection control system with the anvil half-section such that the deflection control system reinforces the distal end of the anvil half-section when a force is applied thereto in a direction transverse to the longitudinal axis defined by the anvil half-section and normal to a plane defined by the tissue contacting surface thereof.

66. A deflection control system for a surgical fastener applying apparatus, the deflection control system comprising:

at least one reinforcing member including a plurality of plates overlying one another, wherein each plate defines a thickness, and wherein the thickness of at least one of the plurality of plates is different from the thickness of at least one other plate.
