Abstract

A method for multi-toning an input digital image having input pixels with two or more color channels to form an output digital image having modified output levels. The method includes producing shifted error signals for each color channel, weighting the shifted error signals to determine weighted error signals for nearby pixels that have yet to be processed; producing shifted weighted error signals; and adjusting the input levels for the nearby pixels responsive to the shifted weighted error signals.

Claims

1. A color error diffusion method for multi-toning an input digital image having input pixels with two or more color channels, each color channel, C, having a specified number of input levels, N_i, to form an output digital image having modified output levels, each color channel of the output digital image having a specified number of output levels, N_o, where 2≦

N_o<

N_i, comprising;

a) determining output levels for each color channel using a process that includes a quantization step that produces intermediate error values and an error sorting step that is applied to the intermediate error values;

b) determining error signals for each color channel responsive to the input levels and output levels;

c) producing first error signal offset values that are a function of the input levels of the input pixel and producing shifted error signals by adding the first error signal offset values to the error signals for each color channel;

d) weighting the shifted error signals for each color channel by a set of error feedback weights to determine weighted error signals for nearby pixels that have yet to be processed;

e) producing additional error signal offset values that are a function of the input levels of the corresponding nearby input pixels and producing shifted weighted error signals by adding the additional error signal offset values to the weighted error signals for each color channel;

f) adjusting the input levels for the nearby pixels responsive to the shifted weighted error signals; and

g) repeating steps a)-f) for multiple input pixels of the input digital image to thereby provide the output digital image.

2. The color error diffusion method of claim 1 where step a) includes

i) quantizing the input level for each color channel of an input pixel in the input digital image to determine a quantized output level for each color channel;

ii) producing the intermediate error signal for each color channel representing a difference between the input level and the quantized output level;

iii) combining the intermediate error signals for each color channel to produce a combined error signal;

iv) sorting the intermediate error signals for each color channel to produce a set of sorted error signals;

v) determining output levels for each color channel responsive to the quantized output levels, the combined error signal, and the sorted error signals.

3. The color error diffusion method of claim 1 where the step c) includes determining a total error signal offset value as a function of a total input level which is a sum of the input levels for a plurality of color channels for the input pixel.

4. The color error diffusion method of claim 3 where the total error signal offset value is distributed between the plurality of color channels according to the ratio of the input level for that color channel and the total input level.

5. The color error diffusion method of claim 1 where error signal offset values for cases where N_o>

2 are calculated from a function adapted to determine error signal offset values for the case where N_o=2.

6. The color error diffusion method according to claim 1 wherein the color channels include cyan, magenta and yellow color channels.

7. The color error diffusion method according to claim 1 wherein the color channels include a black color channel.

8. A computer program product, comprising a computer readable storage medium for practicing the color error diffusion method according to claim 1.
