1. An apparatus for identifying network elements connected to an optical node comprising:

  • a receiver configured to receive communications from a first network element at a first frequency f1 and a second network element at a second frequency f2 at the same time, the first frequency f1 and the second frequency f2 being selected so that f1+f2 produce a third frequency f3 which produces intermodulation disturbances in a transmitting laser;

    a fast Fourier transform (FFT) module configured to identify the third frequency f3;

    a power monitoring unit which is configured to measure the power in a signal; and

    a microprocessor configured to determine that the first network element and the second network element are connected to the same optical node if the third frequency f3 is detected to have more power than a predetermined power spectral data threshold.
