Abstract

Apparatus, and an associated method, by which to form a quick page message for broadcast to access terminals to alert the access terminals of pending communication. The quick page message includes a structure formed of page identifier sets. During formation of the structure, a rearranger shortens the bit length of one or more of the page identifier sets. By reducing the bit length, the likelihood of a resultant redundant page identifier set, of the same bit length, is increased. Redundant page identifier sets are removable from the resultant quick page message.

Claims

1. A method for forming an access-terminal paging message, said method comprising the operations of:

identifying a first partial identity that has a common portion that is in common with that of an other partial identity; and

choosing to structure the access-terminal paging message to include the common portion such that the common portion identifies both the first partial identity and the other partial identity.

2. The method of claim 1 wherein said operation of choosing further comprises choosing a length of at least one additional partial identifier.

3. The method of claim 2 wherein the at least one additional partial identifier is of a length dissimilar with that of the common portion.

4. The method of claim 3 wherein the length of the common portion approaches half the length of the additional partial identifier.

5. The method of claim 2 wherein the at least one additional partial identifier comprises a plurality of additional partial identifiers.

6. The method of claim 1 wherein said operation of choosing further comprises choosing to structure the access-terminal paging message to convey an additional partial identity bit.

7. The method of claim 6 wherein the additional partial identity bit comprises an explicit, additional partial identity bit.

8. The method of claim 6 wherein said operation of choosing to structure the access-terminal paging message to convey an additional partial identity bit further comprises choosing to convey a plurality of additional partial identity bits.

9. The method of claim 8 wherein the plurality of additional partial identity bits are associated with at least one selected partial identifier of the access terminal paging message.

11. The apparatus of claim 1 wherein said structure chooser is further configured to choose a length of at least one additional partial identifier.

12. The apparatus of claim 11 wherein the at least one additional partial identifier is of a length dissimilar with that of the common portion.

13. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the length of the common portion approaches half the length of the additional partial identifier.

14. The apparatus of claim 12 wherein the at least one additional partial identifier comprises a plurality of additional partial identifiers.

10. Apparatus for forming an access-terminal paging message, said apparatus comprising:

an identifier configured to identify a first partial identity that has a common portion that is in common with that of an other partial identity; and

a structure chooser configured to choose structure of the access-terminal paging message to include the common portion that identifies both the first partial identity and the other partial identity.

15. The apparatus of claim 10 wherein said structure chooser is further configured to choose to structure the access-terminal paging message to convey an additional partial identity bit.

16. The apparatus of claim 15 wherein the additional partial identity bit is associated with a selected partial identifier of the access-terminal paging message.

17. A method for facilitating paging of an access terminal, said method comprising the operations of:

detecting delivery at the access terminal of a paging message, the paging message structured to include a common portion that identifies both a first partial identity and a second partial identity; and

deciding whether the common portion indicates that the access terminal is paged.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein the paging message whose delivery is detected during said operation of detecting is further structured to include at least one additional partial identity and wherein said operation of deciding further comprises deciding whether any of the common portion and the at least one additional partial identity indicates that the access terminal is paged.

19. Apparatus for facilitating paging of an access terminal, said apparatus comprising:

a detector configured to detect delivery at the access terminal of a paging message structured to include a common portion that identifies both a first partial identity and a second partial identity; and

a decider configured to decide whether the common portion indicates that the access terminal is paged.

20. The apparatus of claim 19 wherein the paging message whose delivery is detected by said detector is further structured to include at least one additional partial identity and wherein said decider is further configured to decide whether any of the common portion and the at least one additional partial identity indicates that the access terminal is paged.
