Abstract

Monitoring content is disclosed. Monitoring content includes detecting a use of controlled content, evaluating a context associated with the use of the controlled content, and automatically engaging with an entity associated with the use of the controlled content.

Claims

1. A method of monitoring content, including:

detecting a use of controlled content;

evaluating a context associated with the use of the controlled content; and

automatically engaging with an entity associated with the use of the controlled content.

2. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the controlled content includes text, audio, image, or video data.

3. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the controlled content is owned by a content owner.

4. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the use of the controlled content is not compliant with a usage rule.

5. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the controlled content is not compliant with a host policy rule.

6. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the controlled content is designated using a username associated with an OSP.

7. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the controlled content is designated using a username and password associated with an OSP.

8. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the use of the controlled content is not compliant with a personal or legal compliance rule.

9. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the controlled content is copyrighted, trademarked, subject to moral rights or subject to rights of personality.

10. A method as recited in claim 1, further including specifying usage rules associated with the controlled content.

11. A method as recited in claim 1, further including specifying a host policy.

12. A method as recited in claim 1, further including acquiring the controlled content.

13. A method as recited in claim 1, further including continuously acquiring new controlled content.

14. A method as recited in claim 1, further including analyzing the controlled content.

15. A method as recited in claim 1, further including using a hash structure to store data associated with the controlled content.

16. A method as recited in claim 1, further including computing a signature or a fingerprint associated with the controlled content.

17. A method as recited in claim 1, further including searching hosted content.

18. A method as recited in claim 1, further including searching the Internet or a subset of the Internet for use of the controlled content.

19. A method as recited in claim 1, further including determining a unique phrase associated with the controlled content.

20. A method as recited in claim 1, further including determining a histogram, spectral data, wavelet, key point identification, or feature extraction associated with the is controlled content.

21. A method as recited in claim 1, further including using a search engine application programming interface (API) to obtain a candidate set of content.

22. A method as recited in claim 1, further including:

performing a first search to obtain a candidate set of content; and

performing a second search that searches the candidate set of content.

23. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein detecting includes computing one or more similarity scores based at least in part on one or more technical factors.

24. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the context includes compliance information.

25. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the context includes reputation information.

26. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the context includes negation information.

27. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the context includes information associated with a common pool of data.

28. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein evaluating includes computing one or more non-compliance scores based at least in part on one or more usage rules specified by an owner of the controlled content.

29. A method as recited in claim 1, further including reporting use of the controlled content.

30. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the entity includes a user of the controlled content.

31. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein engaging includes sending a communication to the entity.

32. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein engaging includes sending a Digital Milennium Copyright Act (DMCA) notice to the entity.

33. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein engaging includes receiving a response from the entity.

34. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein engaging includes causing use of the controlled content to be compliant.

35. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein detecting, evaluating, or engaging is provided by a web service.

36. A method as recited in claim 1, wherein the controlled content is distinct from a keyword.

37. A system for monitoring content, including:

a processor configured to;

detect a use of controlled content;

evaluate a context associated with the use of the controlled content; and

automatically engage with an entity associated with the use of the controlled content; and

a memory coupled with the processor, wherein the memory provides the processor with instructions.

38. A computer program product for monitoring content, the computer program product being embodied in a computer readable medium and comprising computer instructions for:

detecting a use of controlled content;

evaluating a context associated with the use of the controlled content; and

automatically engaging with an entity associated with the use of the controlled content.
