Abstract

The present technology relates to protocols relative to utility meters associated with an open operational framework. More particularly, the present subject matter relates to protocol subject matter for advanced metering infrastructure, adaptable to various international standards, while economically supporting a 2-way mesh network solution in a wireless environment, such as for operating in a residential electricity meter field. The present subject matter supports meters within an ANSI standard C12.22/C12.19 system while economically supporting a 2-way mesh network solution in a wireless environment, such as for operating in a residential electricity meter field, all to permit cell-based adaptive insertion of C12.22 meters within an open framework. Cell isolation is provided through quasi-orthogonal sequences in a frequency hopping network. Additional features relate to apparatus and methodology subject matters relating to broadcast acknowledgement features.

Claims

1. A method for distributing information to nodes in an advanced metering system mesh network, comprising:

establishing a mesh network including at least one master node and a plurality of node devices, at least some of which node devices comprise metrology devices;

configuring the network for bidirectional communications among the at least one master node and each of the plurality of node devices using a repeating hyperframe subdivided into a repeating time slot packet protocol;

assigning levels to each node based on the number of hops the node is away from the master node such that nodes further away from the master node will be assigned higher numbers;

identifying at each node neighbor nodes thereof, wherein neighbors with a lower level are identified as fathers of the node, neighbors having an equal level are identified as brothers, and neighbors having a higher level are identified as sons;

broadcasting a message from the master node to the higher level nodes; and

assigning acknowledgement sequences to son nodes within messages broadcast by father nodes,

whereby sons failing to receive messages broadcast from fathers may be identified.

2. A method as in claim 1, wherein assigning acknowledgement sequences comprises broadcasting son nodes'"'"' network addresses sequentially in messages transmitted from father nodes.

3. A method as in claim 2, further comprising configuring son nodes to acknowledge receipt of messages from father nodes in accordance with the order of addresses in messages from father nodes.

4. A method as in claim 3, further comprising configuring son nodes to acknowledge receipt of messages from father nodes sequentially beginning in the time slot following reception of messages from father nodes.

5. A method as in claim 3, further comprising:

subdividing the repeating time slots into sequential sub-timeslots; and

configuring son nodes to acknowledge receipt of messages from father nodes sequentially in sub-timeslots beginning in the first sub-timeslot of the time slot following reception of messages from father nodes.

6. A method as in claim 4, further comprising:

storing at father nodes identifications of responding son nodes; and

repeating broadcast messages only to son nodes that did not respond.

7. A method as in claim 2, further comprising transmitting broadcast data with a broadcast identification as a message in a time slot immediately following the broadcast message including son nodes'"'"' sequential addresses.

8. A method as in claim 6, further comprising:

configuring nodes to forward messages to higher level nodes only once per broadcast identification,

whereby duplication of forwarded messages may be avoided.

9. A method as in claim 8, further comprising:

delaying forwarding broadcast messages to higher level nodes for a predetermined time,

whereby network interference may be avoided.

10. A method as in claim 1, further comprising:

broadcasting messages with a 32-bit cyclic redundancy check,

whereby message corruption by noise or interference may be avoided.

11. A method for distributing information to nodes in an advanced metering system mesh network, comprising:

establishing a mesh network including at least one master node and a plurality of node devices, at least some of which node devices comprise metrology devices;

configuring the network for bi-directional communications among the at least one master node and each of the plurality of node devices using a repeating hyperframe subdivided into a repeating time slot packet protocol;

assigning levels to each node based on the number of hops the node is away from the master node such that nodes further away from the master node will be assigned higher numbers;

identifying at each node neighbor nodes thereof, wherein neighbors with a lower level are identified as fathers of the node, neighbors having an equal level are identified as brothers, and neighbors having a higher level are identified as sons; and

broadcasting messages from father nodes to son nodes as paired sequences,

wherein the first message in the paired sequence specifies a response order for son nodes and the second message includes a broadcast identification.

12. A method as in claim 11, further comprising broadcasting son nodes'"'"' network address as a portion of the first message.

13. A method as in claim 12, further comprising configuring son nodes to acknowledge receipt of messages from father nodes in accordance with the order of addresses in messages from father nodes.

14. A method as in claim 13, further comprising configuring son nodes to acknowledge receipt of messages from father nodes sequentially beginning in the time slot following reception of messages from father nodes.

15. A method as in claim 13, further comprising:

subdividing the repeating time slots into sequential sub-timeslots; and

configuring son nodes to acknowledge receipt of messages from father nodes sequentially in sub-timeslots beginning in the first sub-timeslot of the time slot following reception of messages from father nodes.

16. A method as in claim 14, further comprising:

storing at father nodes identifications of responding son nodes; and

repeating broadcast messages only to son nodes that did not respond.

17. A method as in claim 11, further comprising:

configuring nodes to forward broadcast messages from father nodes to son nodes only once per broadcast identification,

whereby duplication of forwarded messages may be avoided.

18. A method as in claim 17, further comprising:

delaying forwarding broadcast messages for a predetermined time,

whereby network interference may be avoided.

19. A method as in claim 11, further comprising:

broadcasting messages with a 32-bit cyclic redundancy check,

whereby message corruption by noise or interference may be avoided.

20. An advanced metering system mesh network, comprising:

at least one master node; and

a plurality of node devices, at least some of which node devices comprise metrology devices, with said plurality of node devices configured for bi-directional communications among said at least one master node and each of said plurality of node devices using a repeating hyperframe subdivided into a repeating time slot packet protocol;

wherein

each respective node is configured for being assigned a level based on the number of hops the node is away from said at least one master node, and for identifying neighbor nodes having a lower level as father nodes, neighbors having an equal level as brother nodes, and neighbors having a higher level as son nodes; and

such father nodes are configured for broadcasting messages to son nodes as paired sequences with a first message specifying a response order for son nodes and a second message including a broadcast identification.

21. An advanced metering system network as in claim 20, wherein such father nodes are further configured for broadcasting addresses of their son nodes as a portion of said first message.

22. An advanced metering system network as in claim 21, wherein the nodes are further configured to sub-divide the repeating time slots into sequential sub-timeslots, and the son nodes are further configured to respond to a message from their father node in a sub-timeslot corresponding to the order of their address in the message from their father nodes.

23. An advanced metering system network as in claim 22, further comprising:

a storage device associated with each father node; and

wherein such father nodes are further configured for storing in their respective storage device identifications of sons from which such fathers receive acknowledgements of messages, and for repeating broadcast messages to son nodes that did not respond.

24. An advanced metering system network as in claim 23, further comprising:

a delay device, associated with each father node, for delaying the forwarding of messages therefrom for a predetermined time,

whereby network interference may be avoided.

25. An advanced metering system network as in claim 23, further comprising:

a broadcast identification device associated with each father node,

whereby nodes may avoid forwarding duplicate messages.
