Abstract

A method for preparing a pigment composition for a plastics colorant is disclosed. The pigment composition is prepared by mixing a press cake of the pigment with a liquid containing a selected type of dispersant before the resulting slurry is dried. Thus prepared pigment composition has improved dispersibility in a thermoplastic or thermoset resin and greatly reduces the filter pressure rise in the molding systems for preparing masterbatches or various plastic compositions for molding, fiber, film and sheet.

Claims

1. A method for preparing a pigment composition for a plastics colorant, comprising (i) providing a pigment press cake, (ii) mixing the press cake with a dispersant and with water, solvent, or a mixture thereof, containing a dispersant;

and (iii) drying the mixture.

2. The method of claim 1 in which the pigment press cake is an indanthrone blue 60 press cake.

3. The method of claim 2 in which the dispersant comprises ethoxylated alkylaryl sulfonate and poly(oxyalkylene) modified phthalocyanine.

4. The method of claim 3 in which the drying is spray drying.

5. The method of claim 1 in which the dispersant comprises ethoxylated alkylaryl sulfonate and poly(oxyalkylene) modified phthalocyanine.

6. The method of claim 1 in which the drying is spray drying.

7. A pigment composition prepared according to the method of claim 1.

8. A pigment composition prepared according to the method of claim 3.

9. A pigment composition prepared according to the method of claim 4.

10. A masterbatch comprising the pigment composition of claim 7 in combination with a plastic molding composition in which the pigment composition is about 0.0001% to about 80% of the combination.

11. A masterbatch comprising the pigment composition of claim 9 in combination with a plastic molding composition in which the pigment composition is about 0.0001% to about 80% of the combination.

12. A plastic molding composition comprising the pigment composition of claim 7.

13. A plastic molding composition comprising the pigment composition of claim 9.

14. A molded plastic article comprising the pigment composition of claim 7.

15. A molded plastic article comprising the pigment composition of claim 9.

16. A film comprising the pigment composition of claim 7.

17. A film comprising the pigment composition of claim 9.

18. A fiber comprising the pigment composition of claim 7.

19. A fiber comprising the pigment composition of claim 9.

20. A sheet comprising the pigment composition of claim 7.

21. A sheet comprising the pigment composition of claim 9.
