Abstract

A lighting system in accordance with one embodiment of the present disclosure includes a first switching unit, a second switching unit and a base unit. The first switching unit has at least one user input device for receiving user inputs for controlling a remote light source. The first switching unit is configured to transmit a first input message in response to a user input received via the at least one user input device, and the second switching unit is coupled to the light source. The base unit is configured to receive the first input message and to correlate the first input message with the second switching unit based on data stored in the base unit, and the base unit is further configured to transmit a first command to the second switching unit based on the first input message. The second switching unit is configured to change an operational state of the light source in response to the first command.

Claims

1. A lighting system, comprising:

a first switching unit having at least one user input device for receiving user inputs for controlling a remote light source, the first switching unit further configured to transmit a first input message in response to a user input received via the at least one user input device;

a second switching unit coupled to the light source; and

a base unit configured to receive the first input message and to correlate the first input message with the second switching unit based on data stored in the base unit, the base unit further configured to transmit a first command to the second switching unit based on the first input message, wherein the second switching unit is configured to change an operational state of the light source in response to the first command.

2. The system of claim 1, wherein the second switching unit has at least one user input device for receiving user inputs for controlling the light source.

3. The system of claim 2, wherein the second switching unit has a light indicator, and wherein the second switching unit is configured to control the light indicator such that the light indicator emits light indicative of the operational state of the light source.

4. The system of claim 1, wherein the first command indicates a load level for the light source, and wherein the second switching element is configured to set the light source to the load level indicated by the first command.

5. The system of claim 4, wherein the first command indicates a rate of power change for the light source, and wherein the second switching element is configured to change, at the rate indicated by the first command, an amount of power delivered to the light source.

6. The system of claim 1, wherein the second switching element is configured to begin adjusting, at a specified rate, an amount of power delivered to the light source in response to the first command, wherein the first switching element is configured to transmit a second input message based on the user input, wherein the base unit is configured to transmit a second command based on the second input message, and wherein the second switching element is configured to stop adjusting the power in response to the second command.

The system of claim 6, wherein the first switching unit is configured to transmit the first input message in response to activation of the at least one user input device by a user and to transmit the second input message in response to deactivation of the at least one user input device by the user.

The system of claim 1, further comprising a third switching element having a light indicator, wherein the base unit is configured to transmit a second command to the third switching element, and wherein the third switching element is configured to adjust a brightness of the light indicator in response to the second command such that the brightness of the light indicator indicates the operational state of the light source as changed by the second switching element in response to the first command.

9. The system of claim 8, wherein the third switching element has at least one user input device for receiving user inputs for controlling the light source.

10. The system of claim 1, wherein the data indicates that a scene is to be activated in response to the first input message, the scene affecting at least one additional light source, wherein the first switching element has a light indicator for indicating a current operational state of the scene.

11. The system of claim 10, wherein the base unit is configured to transmit a second command to the first switching unit in response to a determination that at least one operational state of at least one light source affected by the scene has been changed, and wherein the first switching unit is configured to change a brightness of the light indicator in response to the second command.

12. A method for use in a lighting system, comprising the steps of:

receiving a user input at a user input device that is remotely located from a base unit;

transmitting a first input message indicative of the user input to the base unit;

identifying, based on data stored by the base unit, a light source to be adjusted in response to the first input message, the light source remotely located from the base unit;

transmitting, based on the identifying step, a first command from the base unit to a switching unit that is coupled to the light source; and

changing an operational state of the light source in response to the first command.

13. The method of claim 12, further comprising the steps of:

controlling a light indicator such that the light indicator indicates a current operational state of the light source; and

adjusting a brightness of the light indicator in response to the receiving step.

14. The method of claim 13, wherein the light indicator is remotely located from the switching unit.

15. The method of claim 12, wherein the first command indicates a load level for the light source, and wherein the changing step comprises the step of setting the light source to the load level indicated by the first command.

16. The method of claim 15, wherein the first command indicates a rate of power change for the light source, and wherein the changing step further comprises the step of changing, at the rate indicated by the command, an amount of power delivered to the light source.

17. The method of claim 12, wherein the switching unit has at least one user input device.

18. The method of claim 12, wherein the changing step comprises the step of adjusting, at a specified rate and in response to the first command, an amount of power delivered to the light source, the method further comprising the steps of:

transmitting a second input message to the base unit based on the user input;

transmitting a second command from the base unit to the switching unit based on the second input message; and

stopping the adjusting step in response to the second command.

19. The method of claim 18, wherein the transmitting the first input message step is performed in response to activation of the at least one user input device, and wherein the transmitting the second input message step is performed in response to deactivation of the at least on user input device.

20. The method of claim 19, wherein the changing step is performed such that a load level of the light source is set based on a duration between the activation and the deactivation.

21. The method of claim 12, further comprising the steps of:

determining that a scene is to be activated in response to the first input message, the scene affecting at least one additional light source; and

controlling a light indicator such that the light indicator indicates a current operational state of the scene.

22. The method of claim 21, further comprising the steps of:

changing an operational state of at least one light source affected by the scene;

determining that the scene is deactivated based on the changing the operational state of the at least one light source affected by the scene step; and

changing a brightness of the light indicator in response to the determining step.
