Abstract

An electronic web page management system monitors links on a web page and provides recommendations on alterations to the link set, such as by adding or removing uniform resource locators (URLs) or other content. The system also permits enhancements to search engine indexes, rankings and results based on an evaluation of link behavior that is implicitly defined.

Claims

1. A method of controlling linkings on a world wide web (www) electronic page with a computing system:

a. automatically analyzing content of the WWW electronic page to identify one or more topics associated with such page with the computing system;

b. comparing content of the WWW electronic page with the computing system to identify a set of related WWW electronic pages which also contain content related to said one or more topics;

c. analyzing a set of links in said set of related WWW electronic pages related to said one or more topics with the computing system to identify a proposed set of links for said content of the WWW electronic page.

2. The method of claim 1 further including a step:

adding said at least some of said proposed set of links to the WWW electronic page with the computing system.

3. The method of claim 1, wherein said set of related WWW electronic pages are analyzed with the computing system to determine content which is semantically related to said content of the WWW electronic page.

4. The method of claim 1, further including a step:

predicting a future page rank for one or more of said set of related WWW electronic pages with the computing system based on an expected and/or measured adoption rate of new links for such electronic pages.

5. The method of claim 1, further including a step:

identifying potential advertising sites within said one or more of said set of related WWW electronic pages with the computing system based on an expected and/or measured adoption rate of new links for such electronic pages.

6. The method of claim 1, further including a step:

modifying a search engine ranking of one or more separate electronic pages with the computing system based on an expected adoption of a link to such one or more related page by the WWW electronic page and/or other pages.

7. The method of claim 1, further including a step:

modifying a search engine result listing with the computing system based on an expected adoption of a link by the WWW electronic page and/or other pages.

8. A method of controlling linkings on a world wide web (WWW) electronic page with a computing system:

a. analyzing content of the WWW electronic page with the computing system;

b. analyzing an initial set of designated links to a set of related WWW pages on said WWW electronic page with the computing system;

c. evaluating content of said WWW electronic page and/or content associated with target pages of said initial set of designated links with the computing system to determine if said set of initial set of designated links should be modified by including one or more links from said target pages;

d. forming a final set of designated links with the computing system based on the results of step (c).

9. The method of claim 1 wherein said content of the WWW page is also compared to content of other WWW pages with the computing system to identify other links for said final set of designated links.

10. A method of adjusting a ranking of an electronic document accessible through the world wide web (WWW) with a computing system:

a. analyzing content of a first WWW electronic page with the computing system;

b. identifying a set of explicit links in said first WWW electronic page to a first set of related WWW pages with the computing system;

c. deriving a set of additional pseudo-links for said first WWW electronic page with the computing system based on evaluating content of one or more related WWW electronic pages;

wherein said related WWW electronic pages are derived with the computing system from said explicit links and/or content analysis of said first WWW electronic page;

d. identifying one or more target pages associated with said set of additional pseudo-links with the computing system;

e. modifying a search engine index ranking for said one or more target pages based on a calculation which includes a factor associated with said additional pseudo-links.

11. The method of claim 10, further including a step:

adjusting said factor with the computing system based on an age of said one or more target pages;

12. The method of claim 10 further including a step:

predicting a future page rank for one or more of target pages with the computing system based on an expected and/or measured adoption rate of new links for such electronic pages.

13. The method of claim 10 wherein said related WWW electronic pages are identified by a semantic analysis of content of said first WWW electronic page.

14. The method of claim 10, further including steps:

tabulating link relationships in said related WWW electronic pages to identify correlations between links; and

recommending a first link to be added to said first WWW electronic page based on the presence of a second link which is correlated to said first link.

15. The method of claim 10, further including a step:

forming a cluster of one or more electronic pages which includes said first WWW electronic page, based on identifying a set of common links.

16. The method of claim 15 further including a step:

recommending a new link to said first WWW electronic page based on an adoption of said new link by one or more second WWW electronic pages in said cluster.

17. The method of claim 10, further including a step:

providing a search engine result in response to a query directed to content present in said one or more target pages based on both said actual links and said pseudo-links.

18. The method of claim 17 wherein said pseudo-links are weighted relative to said actual links.

19. The method of claim 10, further including a step:

predicting a future search engine relevance for one or more of said target pages based on both said actual links and said pseudo-links.

20. A method of operating an electronic search engine comprising:

a. providing a first set of electronic pages responsive to queries directed to a first topic;

wherein said first set of electronic pages are ranked at least in part based on evaluating one or more explicit linkings from a second set of pages to said first set of pages;

b. deriving a set of pseudo-links for said first topic, which pseudo-links are based on at least one of;

a) said explicit linking;

b) content analysis of said first set of electronic pages;

c) content analysis of said second set of pages;

c. modifying a search engine rank and/or a composition of said first set of electronic pages based on a link calculation which includes a factor associated with said set of pseudo-links.

21. The method of claim 1, further including a step:

identifying potential advertising sites within said one or more of said set of related WWW electronic pages based on an expected and/or measured adoption rate of new links for such electronic pages.

22. The method of claim 1, further including a step:

modifying a search engine ranking of one or more separate electronic pages based on an expected adoption of a link to such one or more related page by the WWW electronic page and/or other pages.

23. The method of claim 1, further including a step:

modifying a search engine result listing based on an expected adoption of a link by the WWW electronic page and/or other pages.

24. The method of claim 20, further including a step:

identifying potential advertising sites based on a modified search engine rank which considers pseudo-links for a page.

25. The method of claim 20, wherein an age of content related to said first topic on said first set of electronic page is considered in said link calculation.
