1. An endotracheal device comprising:

  • a tubular housing having one end adapted for insertion into a subject'"'"'s trachea and an other end adapted for placement external of the subject, the tubular housing defining a lumen therethrough to facilitate bidirectional passage of air into and out of the subject to ventilate the subject'"'"'s lungs; and

    a carbon dioxide detector having a carbon dioxide sensitive indicator disposed on a borosilicate substrate placed within the lumen to determine the presence of carbon dioxide therein while still permitting bidirectional flow of air therethrough to ventilate the subject'"'"'s lungs.
