Abstract

A system and method for remote activation of a device includes, in one embodiment, transmitting a command message according to a first modulation, and transmitting a signal representing the command message for the device according to a second modulation. The signal representing the command message transmitted according to the second modulation may be transmitted within the command message transmitted according to the first modulation.

Claims

1. A system for wireless control of a device, the system comprising:

a remote unit comprising

a user interface for selecting a command for the device,

a controller for generating a command message corresponding to the command, and

a transmitter for transmitting the command message according to a first modulation and transmitting a signal representing the command message according to a second modulation, wherein the signal representing the command message transmitted according the second modulation is transmitted within the command message transmitted according to the first modulation.

2. The system of claim 1 wherein the first modulation comprises amplitude shift keyed modulation and the second modulation comprises frequency shift keyed modulation.

3. The system of claim 1 wherein the command message is transmitted at a first data rate and the signal is transmitted at a second data rate greater than the first data rate.

The system of claim 3 wherein a first latency is associated with the command when the command message is transmitted at the first data rate, and a second latency is associated with the command when the signal is transmitted at the second data rate, the second latency being less than the first latency.

The system of claim 1 wherein the controller partitions the command message into a plurality of packets, each packet comprising a portion of the command message transmitted according to the first modulation, and at least one packet comprising the signal representing the command message transmitted in its entirety according to the second modulation.

6. The system of claim 1 further comprising a device unit, the device unit comprising:

a receiver for receiving the command message transmitted according to the first modulation and the signal transmitted according to the second modulation; and

a controller, in communication with the receiver, for processing the command message and the signal.

7. The system of claim 6 wherein the device unit controller generates a control signal for use in executing the command message represented by the received signal.

8. The system of claim 6 wherein the device unit controller generates a control signal for use in executing the command message transmitted according to the first modulation.

9. A system for wireless control of a device, the system comprising:

a device unit comprising

a receiver for receiving a command message representing a command for the device transmitted according to a first modulation, and for receiving a signal representing the command transmitted according to a second modulation, wherein the signal representing the command message transmitted according the second modulation is transmitted within the command message transmitted according to the first modulation, and

a controller, in communication with the receiver, for processing the command message.

10. The system of claim 9 wherein the controller generates a control signal for use in executing the command when the controller processes the signal transmitted according to the second modulation.

11. The system of claim 9 wherein the controller generates a control signal for use in executing the command when the controller processes the command message transmitted according to the first modulation.

The system of claim 9 wherein the command message is received in a plurality of packets, each packet comprising a portion of the command message transmitted according to the first modulation, and at least one packet comprising the command message transmitted in its entirety according to the second modulation.

13. The system of claim 9 wherein the first modulation comprises amplitude shift keyed modulation and the second modulation comprises frequency shift keyed modulation.

14. The system of claim 13 wherein the receiver is configured to simultaneously demodulate amplitude shift keyed and frequency shift keyed modulation.

15. A system for wireless control of a device, the system comprising:

a remote unit comprising

a user interface for selecting a command for the device,

a controller for generating a command message corresponding to the command and partitioning the command message into a plurality of packets, and

a transmitter for transmitting the plurality of packets according to a first modulation and transmitting a signal representing the command message according to a second modulation, wherein the signal representing the command message transmitted according the second modulation is transmitted within at least one of the plurality of packets transmitted according to the first modulation, and

a device unit comprising

a receiver for receiving at least one of the plurality of packets transmitted according to the first modulation and the signal transmitted according to the second modulation, wherein the receiver is capable of simultaneously demodulating the at least one packet and the signal, and

a controller, in communication with the receiver, for processing the at least one of the plurality of packets.

16. The system of claim 15 wherein processing comprises assembling a plurality of received packets into the command message, and generating a control signal for use in executing the command message.

17. The system of claim 15 wherein the device unit controller generates a control signal for use in executing the command message represented by the received signal.

18. The system of claim 15 wherein the first modulation comprises amplitude shift keyed modulation and the second modulation comprises frequency shift keyed modulation.

19. The system of claim 15 wherein the plurality of packets are transmitted at a first data rate and the signal is transmitted at a second data rate greater than the first data rate.

20. The system of claim 19 wherein a first latency is associated with the command when the plurality of packets are transmitted at first data rate, and a second latency is associated with the command when the signal is transmitted at the second data rate, the second latency being less than the first latency.
