Abstract

In one aspect, the invention relates to hydrolysis-resistant silicone compounds. In particular, disclosed are sterically hindered hydrolysis-resistant silicone compounds and improved purity hydrolysis-resistant silicone compounds. Also disclosed are processes for making hydrolysis-resistant silicone compounds; the products of the disclosed processes; compositions and polymers comprising the disclosed compounds and products of the disclosed processes; and ophthalmic lenses, for example contact lenses, intraocular lenses, artificial cornea, and spectacle lenses, comprising the disclosed compositions, disclosed polymers, disclosed compounds, and products of the disclosed processes. This abstract is intended as a scanning tool for purposes of searching in the particular art and is not intended to be limiting of the present invention.

Claims

1. A process for making a silicone compound having the structure:

2. The compound of claim 1, wherein M is a group comprising an acryloyl group or a methacryloyl group.

3. The process of claim 1, wherein L has the structure:

4. The process of claim 1, wherein water is substantially absent.

5. The process of claim 4, wherein a disiloxane compound having the structure:

6. The process of claim 3, wherein k is 0, and wherein m is from 1 to 3.

7. The process of claim 3, wherein k is 1, and wherein m is from 1 to 7.

8. The process of claim 1, wherein one of R¹, R², and R³ is methyl, and at least one of R¹, R², and R³ is ethyl, propyl, or butyl.

9. The process of claim 1, wherein two of R¹, R², and R³ are methyl, and one of R¹, R², and R³ is ethyl, propyl, or butyl.

16. The product of the process of claim 1.

17. A polymer comprising at least one residue of a compound prepared by the process of claim 1.

18. The polymer of claim 17, wherein at least 25% of the polymer comprises residues of a compound prepared by the process of claim 1.

19. An ophthalmic lens comprising the polymer of claim 17.

20. A contact lens comprising the polymer of claim 17.

10. A process for making a silicone compound having the structure:

11. The process of claim 10, wherein the silicone compound is produced in a yield of at least about 25% by gas chromatography analysis.

12. The process of claim 10, wherein the silicone compound is produced in a yield of at least about 50% by gas chromatography analysis.

13. The process of claim 10, wherein water is substantially absent.

14. The process of claim 10, wherein a disiloxane compound having the structure:

15. The process of claim 14, wherein the disiloxane compound is present in an amount of less than about 10% by gas chromatography analysis.
