1. A method of monitoring blood pressure in a patient, the method comprising the steps of:

  • providing a non-invasive blood pressure (NIBP) monitor having a selectively inflatable and deflatable blood pressure cuff and at least one pressure transducer for detecting oscillation pulses from the patient;

    acquiring a waveform of the patient, the waveform having a series of time-spaced pulses each representing a patient heartbeat;

    analyzing the waveform to determine a timing period and a deflation period based upon the waveform;

    inflating the pressure cuff to a first pressure level;

    detecting the beginning of one of the oscillation pulses from the pressure transducer;

    determining the amplitude of the oscillation pulse at the first pressure level during the timing period following the beginning of the oscillation pulse; and

    deflating the blood pressure cuff during the deflation period to a second pressure level, wherein the deflation period follows the timing period.
