Abstract

The method includes providing a delivery device. The delivery device comprises a support stent, an inner sheath, and an outer sheath. The support stent is slidably positioned about a wire lumen. The support stent has a proximal end and a distal end, and is expandable from a compressed delivery configuration to an expanded configuration. The inner sheath is retractably positioned about the support stent with the support stent in the delivery configuration. The anchor stent is slidably positioned about the inner sheath and is deployable from a compressed delivery configuration to a deployed configuration. The outer sheath is retracted to expand the anchor stent from the delivery configuration to an expanded configuration. The anchor stent is deployed in the body vessel. The inner sheath is retracted to expand the support stent from the compressed insertion configuration to an expanded configuration.

Claims

1. A method for deploying a stent graft in a body vessel, comprising:

providing a delivery device having a support stent slidably positioned about a wire lumen and having a proximal end and a distal end, the support stent expandable from a compressed delivery configuration to an expanded configuration, an inner sheath retractably positioned about the support stent with the support stent in the delivery configuration, an anchor stent slidably positioned about the inner sheath and deployable from a compressed delivery configuration to a deployed configuration;

retracting the outer sheath to expand the anchor stent from the delivery configuration to an expanded configuration;

deploying the anchor stent in the body vessel; and

retracting the inner sheath to expand the support stent from the compressed insertion configuration to an expanded configuration.

2. The method of claim 1, where the anchor stent is coupled to a tubular graft having a proximal end and a distal end and further comprises retracting the inner sheath to expand the support stent at least partially within the tubular graft.

3. The method of claim 1 where the delivery device comprises a support member and a guidewire and the method further comprises moving the support member in a proximal direction along the guide wire to apply force to the support stent as the inner sheath is retracted.

4. The method of claim 1 where deploying the anchor stent comprises:

partially deploying the anchor stent;

retracting the inner sheath; and

fully deploying the anchor stent.

5. The method of claim 2 further comprising substantially fixing the support stent in the expanded configuration.

6. The method of claim 5 where fixing the support stent in the expanded configuration comprises engaging a feature on the distal end of the graft with the support stent.

7. A method for deploying a stent graft in a body vessel, comprising:

providing a stent graft on a delivery device, the stent graft comprising an anchor stent and a support stent, and the delivery device comprising an outer sheath positioned at least about the anchor stent and an inner sheath positioned about the support stent;

placing the delivery device in the vessel;

retracting the outer sheath;

partially expanding the anchor stent;

retracting the inner sheath to deploy the support stent; and

fully expanding the anchor stent.

8. The method of claim 7 further comprising moving a retraction element operatively coupled to each of the outer sheath and inner sheath between an initial position and a first stop position to retract the outer sheath and at least partially deploy the anchor stent;

and

moving the retraction element between the first stop position and a second stop position to fully release the anchor stent and retract the inner sheath.

9. The method of claim 7 further comprising moving a first retraction element operatively coupled to the outer sheath to retract the outer sheath and partially deploy the anchor stent;

and

moving a second retraction element operatively coupled to the inner sheath withdraw the inner sheath.

10. The method of claim 7 where the delivery device comprises a handle having a button and the method further comprises compressing the button to retract the other sheath.

11. The method of claim 7 where deploying the support stent further comprises substantially fixing the support stent in a deployed configuration.

12. The method of claim 11 where a proximal end of the support stent is coupled to a tubular graft and substantially fixing the support stent in a deployed configuration comprises coupling a distal end of the graft to the support stent.

13. A method for deploying a stent graft in a body vessel at a target location, comprising:

providing a stent graft having a proximal end, a distal end, and a distal ring at the distal end;

providing a delivery device configured to retain the stent graft in a delivery configuration during delivery of the stent graft to the target location, the delivery device having an inner sheath and an outer sheath;

moving the delivery device in at least one of a proximal direction and a distal direction to position the distal ring of the stent graft at a distal anchor location with respect to the target location;

withdrawing the outer sheath of the delivery device to deploy the distal end of the stent graft and the distal ring;

anchoring the distal ring to a vessel wall at the distal location;

withdrawing the inner sheath of the delivery device to deploy the proximal end of the stent graft; and

anchoring the proximal end of the stent graft to the vessel wall at a proximal anchor location.

14. The method of claim 13 where the stent graft comprises a tubular graft and a support stent positioned at least partially within the tubular graft.

15. The method of claim 14 where, in the delivery configuration, the support stent is coupled to the graft only at the proximal end of the graft.

16. The method of claim 14 further comprising fixing the support stent in a deployed configuration.

17. The method of claim 16 where fixing the support stent in the deployed configuration substantially prevents subsequent shortening of the support stent.

18. The method of claim 16 where the distal ring comprises a locking mechanism and fixing the support stent in the deployed configuration comprises the locking mechanism engaging the support stent.

19. The method of claim 16 where the support stent comprises at least one wire forming a first helical wire portion having a first translational direction about an axis of the support stent and a second helical wire portion having a second translational direction about the axis opposite the first translational direction, where the deployed configuration corresponds to a curvature of the body vessel

20. A method for deploying an endoluminal prosthesis at a target endoluminal location, comprising:

positioning a prosthesis delivery system at the target location, the prosthesis delivery system comprising an expandable prosthesis, an advanceable support member and a retractable delivery sheath; and

simultaneously retracting the delivery sheath and advancing the support member.

21. The method of claim 20 further comprising moving a handle to impart relative movement simultaneously to the delivery sheath and the support member.

22. The method of claim 21 where simultaneously retracting the delivery sheath and advancing the support member further comprises actuating the handle to impart a first relative movement to the delivery sheath and an opposite second relative movement to the support member determined by a foreshortening percentage of the prosthesis.

24. The method of claim 20 comprising releasing and deploying a distal end of the prosthesis at the target location.

25. The method of claim 24 where releasing and deploying a distal end of the prosthesis further comprises overcoming a frictional force between the delivery sheath and the prosthesis such that the prosthesis is deployed at the target location without repositioning the prosthesis.

23. The method 20 where retracting the delivery sheath further comprises retracting the delivery sheath in a distal direction, and the advancing the support member further comprises axially advancing the support member in a proximal direction to contact the distal end of the prosthesis.
