Abstract

A system for infusing liquid to a body includes an infusion device, a network interface with a cell phone and wireless link and a network server system capable of communication with the infusion device through the network interface. The server system has access to a file of information specific to the controller for the infusion device. The infusion device includes a source of infusion fluid, a delivery port, a pump between the source of infusion fluid and the delivery port and a controller capable of programmable pump rate and sequence. A method for infusing liquid to a body includes controlling infusion using a programmable controller, establishing a file of information specific to the controller accessible to an extended area network server system and remotely transmitting commands to the controller. The information specific to the controller in the file is amended from a control terminal remote from the body. Operating instructions responsive to the updated information in the file are provided over an extended area network to a programmable two-way communication device. The device is capable of communication with the controller to forward operating commands. Requests for a bolus or a basal rate change are made through input to the two-way communication device which responds with commands transmitted over the wireless link to the controller consistent with the operating instructions from the server system. Network access through a monitoring terminal to the incidents of amending information specific to the controller is used for generating payments for the incidents of amending information specific to the controller accessed by the monitoring terminal.

Claims

1. A system for infusing liquid to a body, comprising

an infusion device including a single use disposable assembly having a source of infusion fluid, a delivery port to the body, a metering element coupled between the source of infusion fluid and the delivery port and a multiuse assembly engageable with the single use disposable assembly and having a controller capable of programmable infusion rate and time sequences;

a two-way communication device capable of communicating with the controller and an extended area network;

a server system capable of communication with the two-way communication device through the extended area network and having access to a file of updatable information specific to the controller.

2. The system of claim 1 further comprising

a control terminal capable of communication with the file for inputting and updating the information specific to the controller in the file.

3. The system of claim 2, the control terminal communication using the extended area network.

4. The system of claim 3 further comprising

a monitoring terminal capable of communication with the file using the extended area network and read only access to the inputting and updating of the information specific to the controller in the file.

5. The system of claim 1, the multiuse assembly further having a wireless link having a radio chip at the controller, the wireless link and the two-way communication device using a local area communication standard.

6. The system of claim 5, the local area communication standard being Bluetooth®

or NFC or Wibree™

.

7. The system of claim 1, the two-way communication device employing voice communication for access to the server system using the extended area network.

8. The system of claim 1, the two-way communication device employing text communication for access to the server system using the extended area network.

9. The system of claim 1, the two-way communication device being capable of employing the extended area network through a wireless network link.

10. The system of claim 9, the two-way communication device being programmable by the server system over the extended area network.

11. The system of claim 10, the two-way communication device being a cellular telephone.

12. The system of claim 11, the two-way communication device including keypad input receivable by the server system for input into the file of information specific to the controller.

13. The system of claim 10, the two-way communication device being a hand held computer with wireless data link to the extended area network.

14. The system of claim 1 further comprising

a sensor capable of generating a diagnostic signal and being in communication with the controller or the two-way communication device, the signal being incorporated into commands for operation of the controller.

15. The system of claim 1, there being multiple said infusion devices, the server system having access to multiple files of information specific to the controllers.

16. The system of claim 1, the metering element including a pump, the controller being a pump controller.

17. A system for infusing liquid to a body, comprising

an infusion device including a single use disposable assembly having a source of infusion fluid, a delivery port to the body, a metering element coupled between the source of infusion fluid and the delivery port and a multiuse assembly engageable with the single use disposable assembly and having a controller capable of programmable infusion rate and time sequences;

a two-way communication device capable of communicating with the controller and an extended area network, the wireless link and the two-way communication device using a local area communication standard;

a server system capable of communication with the two-way communication device through the extended area network and having access to a file of updatable information specific to the controller, the two-way communication device being capable of employing the extended area network through a wireless network link and being programmable by the server system over the extended area network.

18. A system for infusing liquid to a body, comprising

an infusion device including a single use disposable assembly having a source of infusion fluid, a delivery port to the body, a metering element coupled between the source of infusion fluid and the delivery port and a multiuse assembly engageable with the single use disposable assembly and having a controller capable of programmable infusion rate and time sequences;

a programmable multi-function device capable of two-way communication with the controller.

19. The system of claim 18, the programmable multi-function device capable of two-way communication with the controller being a cell phone.

20. The system of claim 19, the cell phone employing a local area communication standard for two-way communication with the controller.

21. The system of claim 18, the programmable multi-function device capable of two-way communication with the controller being a PDA.

22. A device for infusing liquid to a body, comprising

a single use disposable assembly including a source of infusion fluid, a delivery port to the body, a pump coupled between the source of infusion fluid and the delivery port and having a pump chamber and a movable pumping element extending to the pump chamber to vary to chamber volume;

a multiuse assembly engageable with the single use disposable assembly including a pump driver extending to the movable pumping element and a controller capable of programmable infusion rate and time sequences.

The device of claim 22, the single use disposable assembly defining an engagement and including a disposable housing containing the source of infusion fluid and the pump with the delivery port including a catheter extending from the housing and the movable pumping element being accessible at the engagement, the multiuse assembly including a multiuse housing with the pump driver including an actuator member extending from the multiuse housing to operatively engage the movable pumping element when the multiuse housing is engaged with the disposable housing at the engagement.

24. A method for infusing liquid to a body, comprising the steps of

controlling infusion to the body using a programmable controller;

establishing a file of information specific to the controller accessible to an extended area network server system;

amending information specific to the controller in the file from a control terminal remote from the body;

transmitting operating instructions responsive to the amended information through the extended area network to a two-way communication device;

inputting a request for a bolus or a basal rate change to the two-way communication device;

transmitting commands from the two-way communication device to the controller responsive to the request for a bolus or a basal rate change and based on the amended information specific to the controller.

25. The method of claim 24 further comprising the step of

providing read only extended area network access through a monitoring terminal to the incidents of amending operating instructions;

generating payments for the incidents of amending operating instructions.

26. The method of claim 24 further comprising the steps of

transmitting sensed information from the controller to the two-way communication device.

The method of claim 24, the step of inputting a bolus request including inputting data to the two-way communication device indicative of a transient intake to the body which impacts the constituent, the step of transmitting the command responsive to the request for the bolus including application of the current information specific to the controller with incorporation of the data indicative of the transient intake to the body which impacts the constituent.

28. The method of claim 27 further comprising the step of

inputting data indicative of the magnitude of a constituent of liquid in the body to the two-way communication device, the application of the current information specific to the controller further being with incorporation of the magnitude of the then current constituent of liquid in the body.

29. The method of claim 24 further comprising the step of

inputting data indicative of the magnitude of a constituent of liquid in the body to the two-way communication device, the step of transmitting the command responsive to the request for the basal rate change or bolus including application of the current information specific to the controller with incorporation of the magnitude of the then current constituent of liquid in the body.

The method of claim 24, the step of inputting a request for a bolus or a basal rate change to the two-way communication device including prompting input of the request by one of displaying choices on a screen or voice communication and responding to the prompting by communicating with the two-way communication device using one of keypad input or voice communication.

The method of claim 24, the step of transmitting operating instructions including programming the two-way communication device, the step of transmitting commands from the two-way communication device to the controller responsive to the request for a bolus or a basal rate change and based on the information specific to the controller including computing commands by the two-way communication device according to programming from the amended operating instructions transmitted from the server system.

32. The method of claim 24, the step of transmitting commands from the two-way communication device to the controller responsive to the request for a bolus or a basal rate change and based on the information specific to the controller being a relay of the amended commands from the server system to the controller.

33. A method for infusing liquid to a body, comprising the steps of

controlling infusion to the body using a programmable controller;

establishing a file of information specific to the controller accessible to a extended area network server system;

amending information specific to the controller in the file from a control terminal remote from the body;

transmitting operating instructions responsive to the amended information specific to the controller through the extended area network to a two-way communication device;

providing network access through a monitoring terminal to the incidents of amending information specific to the controller;

generating payments for the incidents of amending information specific to the controller, the incidents of amending information specific to the controller being accessed by the monitoring terminal.
