Abstract

Devices, delivery systems and delivery techniques for an occlusion device for the closure of physical anomalies, such as an atrial septal defect, a patent foramen ovale (PFO), and other septal and vascular defects are described. The devices, delivery systems and delivery techniques relate particularly to, but are not limited to, a patent foramen ovale (PFO) occluder made from a polymer tube. The securement systems enable the deployment (and retrieval) of the device. In one aspect, the second securement system employs a snare connection. The snare connection may have various configurations, including a single snare, double snare, and double criss-cross snare. The securement systems are detached when the device has been properly positioned. The securement systems can be manipulated by control systems provided in the control portion of the delivery system.

Claims

1. A delivery system to deliver a medical device through a body lumen comprising:

a securement system comprising a first snare wire that is securable to an end portion of the medical device;

a second snare wire that is securable to a the end portion of the medical device;

wherein the first and second snares can move so as to release the medical device at a deployment location; and

a delivery sheath to enclose at least a portion of the medical device, wherein the first and second snares include loops that expand to release the medical device.

2. The delivery system of claim 1, wherein the medical device is an occluder.

3. The delivery system of claim 1, further comprising a lumen through the delivery system and wherein at least a portion of the wire passes through the delivery system.

4. The delivery system of claim 3, wherein the first snare portion is movable independently from the second snare portion.

5. The delivery system of claim 3, wherein the first and second snare wire is at least one number selected from the group of a wire, tube, or solid elongated member and filament.

6. The delivery system of claim 3, wherein the first and second snare wire comprises at least one member selected from the group consisting of metal, alloy, stainless steel, MP35N alloy, polymer, memory metal, and nitinol.

7. The delivery system of claim 1, wherein the snares are configured to attach to at least one protrusion on the medical device.

8. A delivery system to deliver a medical device through a body lumen comprising:

a first securement system comprising a first engagement member that is securable to a distal end portion of the medical device;

a second securement system comprising a snare member that is can be secured to a proximal end portion of the medical device;

the snare including a loop wherein the second securement system can release the medical device when the loop is loosened; and

,

a delivery sheath to enclose at least a portion of the medical device.

9. The delivery system of claim 8, wherein the medical device is an occluder.

10. The delivery system of claim 8, wherein the first securement system comprises a delivery wire, which comprises a distal wire portion and a proximal wire portion, and the snare member is adapted to ensnare a portion of the medical device to keep the medical device attached to the delivery system.

11. The delivery system of claim 10, wherein the first and second snares comprise at least one member selected from the group consisting of metal, alloy, stainless steel, MP35N alloy, polymer, memory metal, and nitinol.

12. The delivery system of claim 11, wherein the delivery system further comprises a catch system to maintain an axial length of the medical device after the device is in its deployed configuration.

13. A delivery system to deliver a medical device through a body lumen comprising:

a securement system comprising a first snare wire that is securable to an end portion of the medical device;

a second snare wire that is securable to a the end portion of the medical device;

wherein the first and second snares can move so as to release the medical device at a deployment location; and

a delivery sheath to enclose at least a portion of the medical device, wherein the first and second snares are configured to attach to protrusions on the medical device.

14. The delivery system of claim 13, wherein the medical device is an occluder.

15. The delivery system of claim 13, further comprising a lumen in the delivery system and wherein at least a portion of the first snare wire passes through the lumen.

16. The delivery system of claim 13, wherein the protrusions are on the proximal side of the medical device.

17. The delivery system of claim 16, wherein the first and second snare wires are adapted to attach to the protrusions on the opposite sides of the device.

18. A delivery system to deliver a medical device through a body lumen comprising:

a first securement system comprising a first engagement member that is securable to a distal end portion of the medical device;

a second securement system comprising a filament that can be secured to a proximal end portion of the medical device;

the filament is adapted to secure the medical device to the delivery system wherein the delivery system is adapted to release the medical device when the filament is released; and

,

a delivery sheath to enclose at least a portion of the medical device.

19. The delivery system of claim 18, wherein the medical device is an occluder.

20. The delivery system of claim 18, wherein the first securement system comprises a delivery wire, which comprises a distal wire portion and a proximal wire portion, and filament is adapted to pass through a portion of the medical device.

21. The delivery system of claim 20, wherein the filament comprises at least one member selected from the group consisting of metal, alloy, stainless steel, MP35N alloy, polymer, memory metal, and nitinol.

22. A method of attaching a medical device to a delivery system using a snare comprising,

securing a medical device to a delivery system with a snare wire that is adapted to selectively release the medical device from the delivery system by loosening the snare.

23. A method of deploying a medical device to a delivery location using a delivery catheter comprising:

a) delivering a medical device to a delivery location, and

b) releasing a snare on the delivery device to separate the medical device from the delivery catheter.

24. The method of claim 23 wherein the releasing step includes releasing the snare from a protrusion on the medical device.

25. The method of claim 23 wherein the medical device is released by loosening a loop.
